  1. Hey guys.

    Hope everyone's doing well!

    - I'm new the forum, been listening to mikes business class, and thought i'd join this place \o /

I have couple of orchestral pieces of my own, but skill wise i thought i'd post this piece in hope for feedback
Its still work in progress but hey, it's presentable i believe

    Thanks guys!

  2. Hey!

Welcome. Nice use of the poll. Ha!

Hmmm.......very unfortunate last name for embarking on a career with music. I'm sure you'll find a lot of people with that, but
consider John Expensiveguy as a rebrand.

I like your friend in the video. She's hot. Literally.

I come from things from a more classical background, so I only have two pieces of advice. Take em or leave em.

    1. A number of spots would benefit from a "Pad" sustaining behind the foreground
    2. If you intentionally omitted pads and a more "resonanate" approach, I suggest at some point having a listen to some of the Russian composers.
I think you would find some additional techniques/tools you can add to your vocabulary. Probably the most similar, the dry ostinato sound, would be Shostakovich 8 mov. 3. Also, I bet you would enjoy the Iron Foundry. Prokofiev's 3rd & 5th is really cool and not too far away in terms of aesthetic goals.

Nice to hear your work. Be well.

    Doug

    Hej John,
Welcome to the forum. Thanks for sharing your piece. To your question: Is it bad? No..I wouldn´t say so. A few thoughts:

As the whole piece is intended to be very ryhthmic and that you focus on your string ostinato quite a lot, I think about if that idea can sustain and keep interest over that 3 minutes or even longer.

The rhythmic core and motivic idea itself therefore doesn´t really change or develop at all. Sure I guess you are not after that rather than creating a build up over the 3 minutes.

Then maybe you could think about to vary the underpinning percussive elements later on in your track? I think hitting the 2 minutes marks the tracks stays more or less at the level of energy and doesn´t really get more exciting or bigger for my ears.

Maybe really is to find a proper b-Section? That thing at 50 seconds is cool but also quite dissconnected to the mood of the piece specifically that early in your piece, probably it would make sense to bring that section later and build a second larger section where you use that idea with the string flowing textures but then use your melodic brass lines over it?

Also don´t forget though this is a suspense, epic action driven piece to have some kind of theme or motif which can keep up the interest. You can think of using the string ostinato, also doing modulations simply to get away from one key? Because the whole piece is in the same key and because of the simplicity of the idea there is a chance to bring a bit of fresh air in your track simply by using a couple of brickwall modulations. For instance modulating a 3rd up or so can bring a bit more exciting because you walk up the ladder, you know?

Other than that, well think also about to double time the ostinato, going from 8th notes, to triplets, or you can do tremolos, or measures 16th to add more drive.

Let me know if that makes any sense to you otherwise just keep on going.

    Best wishes,
    Alex

  4. Heh :)
My name's Slobodan Cvjeticanin, but there's no way in world anyone's pronouncing that,
And in Serbian - Slobodan can mean Freeman [The best translation when used as a word 's: to be free]
And John is ez to remember, there's a reason why ching-changs [pardon my quazzi meme racism] renamed themselves as John in US, does that make me chinese HMM...

It's a "boss/character" from game World of Warcraft, when folks're encountering her this music plays out, and ye she be smoking hot :3

    - Pad sustains, okay i'll look into it, i wanted to make this a copy-paste of what i've heard [the way this's composed's kinda copy-paste like they've done it] so i can git gudd myself and build something similar.

I love the Symphony No.8 - it's the type of music that i like, i don't understand why the horns there're played like they are in all honesty but then again that's why i'm a newbie ;p

I don't like the other one, it sounds like thrill music to me?

Although thank you very much for the reply & feedback!

    Stay awesome

    Hey alex, thanks man!
The only thing that's going to be added is a choir at last 40 secs, and there'll be a run after 3:30 with choir as well,

Can you tell me what exactly do you mean with "vary the underpinning percussive elements" ? Do you want me to make the variation on the way percussions are played?
The thing is i've been trying to copy the piece by ear

    It starts at 1:55
2:37 is the part that you've mentioned

I get it that modulation needs to be added, i'm still figuring out on how/where the hell am i going to do that and you're deff right about it

This's just a study on how game-orchestral soundtracks work :/
Can you please tell me what exactly do you also mean by modulating a 3rd up?

Thanks for the feedback mate regardless very kind of you!

  5. No. None. Zero.

Yeup. That is how you do it. Just keep at it. Work hard and over time you'll notice the improvements to your writing I am sure.

About 3 years ago I did a similar thing with Mike Verta's score for the Batman Simulator ride. It was a fun exercise.
Just three intense days of listening over and over again and transcribing what I thought I heard.

Perhaps some ideas in here you might find interesting

    You too
