1. Didja accidentally blow through the whole, "We're using our real names" thing on registration? No problem, just send me (Mike) a Conversation message and I'll get you sorted, by which I mean hammered-into-obedient-line because I'm SO about having a lot of individuality-destroying, oppressive shit all over my forum.

Universal Theme Transcribing Exercise

Discussion in 'Critique & Feedback' started by Duncan Formosa, Apr 7, 2020.

  1. Thought I would try and recreate the Universal theme tune as a learning exercise and to see how close I could get it to sound, and then because I had nothing else to do I tried to recreate the logo in After Effects as well.

Here's the result. Let me know how you think I done!

  2. You did really well!

If I may make a few suggestions should you decide to have another pass at it:

–Maybe see if you can double the horns with another set if you have one available.
–The second time round with the horns melody, do something to make them just noticeably a bit more robust. (In the original recording, the second time round is played on Wagner tubas.)
–Make those big double stabs a lot beefier—like, say, a proper Ribeye—if you have any edgy fortissimo staccatos or something.
–On the two-bar tutti closing, see if you can close up the textural gap between the trumpets and the lower brass for a more unified brass choir. The trumpets seem a bit detached from it.
–Perhaps you could cut the duration of the last note by about 50%, and really spike it good and proper.

One of the frustrating things about tenuto-type notes in the brass libraries I have heard is that the decay aspect is not emphasized enough, and that performance nuance is what really brings these types of scorings to life. Brass players do it automatically per the context without it even having to be marked.
