1. Didja accidentally blow through the whole, "We're using our real names" thing on registration? No problem, just send me (Mike) a Conversation message and I'll get you sorted, by which I mean hammered-into-obedient-line because I'm SO about having a lot of individuality-destroying, oppressive shit all over my forum.

The Ways of a Child

  1. This is my first post here.

I stopped writing and playing music 10 years ago when I got married because it wasn’t priority. We were hungry and the music wasn’t paying the bills at the time.

I’m fine with that decision because my music was the typical vertical development crap, or new idea, and here’s another idea, and here’s another idea etc. etc. All composed with virtual instruments which were severely compromising my ability to write.

I never stopped thinking about music though, so during those 10 years I’ve thought a lot about how I would like to write. I want to write music that has meaning, that will be remembered, music that will bring joy to people's lives, I want to put good things into the world, I want to tell stories with my music.

I’ve had a lot of life changes in those 10 years. I had 4 beautiful kids, two boys and two girls. We homeschool them which is the best ever! Last year I quit my job and started working for myself which has given me the opportunity to start writing again.

So A couple of days ago I did it. I set down at the piano and composed my first original piece in 10 years. It’s about my kids. Watching them grow and play and go through life. I wanted to write a song about that.

I set a goal for myself with this song. I wanted it to modulate to a different key but then end on the original key, which is f major. I also wanted to deviate from the childlike nostalgic melody but keep reinstating it. I feel like some of the modulations could be smother, but to be honest, I’ve never written like this before, so I’m pretty happy with it. Transcribing some of Mike's pieces helped with that.

This is ‘The Ways of a Child’.

It’s been a very long time, so I’m a bit clammy.

Thanks so much for the listen and I look forward to your feedback.

  2. I love it.
Only comments I have is that it drags a bit for me at 1:14 to 1:30.
Maybe you can add more tension here, I'm thinking of increasingly dissonant chord extensions (7ths, 11ths, 13ths) over V.
Or maybe something different but a bit more interesting.

Other than that it's great in my opinion!
    Keep it up!

  3. Thanks so much for your feedback Michael! I’ll give that a try.
