1. Didja accidentally blow through the whole, "We're using our real names" thing on registration? No problem, just send me (Mike) a Conversation message and I'll get you sorted, by which I mean hammered-into-obedient-line because I'm SO about having a lot of individuality-destroying, oppressive shit all over my forum.

The French Detective

Discussion in 'Critique & Feedback' started by Vincent Rice, Jul 15, 2017.

  1. Oh boy, this is scary. I feel like I'm mixing it with the grown-ups here (and I'm probably old enough to be your Dad...)

Anyway - I snagged this free music box sample instrument and a whole track grew up around it. Think French detective TV series title song...

  2. I'll tell you what's wrong with it. It needs to modulate around the melody in the middle of the second run-through, just to add a little hip 'ear tickle'. Which is a PIA 'cos it's orchestrated and mixed and finished.
Also the first half needs to build better.

I'll give it a go though and post back, just for my own education.

  3. Hey Vincent,
I'm a pretty old guy myself (and far less accomplished than most of the composers here) but I'll jump in. You've got the initial feel down. The piece instantly feels French-y and detective-y. The melody is fairly simple so it defiantly needs some more development to make it intersting. You don't have to just "modulate" to add interest. Mike is pretty adamant that you can change one note in a harmonic progression and change the context of everything around. I would start with experimenting with different ways to reharmonizes the melody to add interest. The dissonance you added right at the end of the piece was nice. Try working that in earlier and see where it take you.

  4. Thanks for commenting Gharun. Thinking about it more I probably need to resolve the tune before going to the diminished. I'm basically going i / V sus / V7/ iii dim. A trip to the iv might be an idea at some point. Plus I really fancy a cheesy whole step up modulation to the second half. Don't write straight into the DAW kids! Finish it on piano first. Making changes after you have fallen in love with the sounds is a pain. I'll get back to this in a week or so.

  5. Sorry to be responding to an older post, but I wanted to express my appreciation for this track. I am also an old guy, really old at 64, so maybe we old guys should start a club or something. Anyway, what I really like is the "feel" and character of this piece. I think it would be even better with the melody as a solo for a woodwind instrument, perhaps clarinet, before hearing it in the strings. I can't help but think of Clousea. :)

  6. Thanks Paul! I appreciate it.

I'll be coming back to this little piece again. I've actually learned a lot in the past couple of months that I'll feedback into it. It'll be an insight into 'my journey' (God, I hate that phrase)
