1. Didja accidentally blow through the whole, "We're using our real names" thing on registration? No problem, just send me (Mike) a Conversation message and I'll get you sorted, by which I mean hammered-into-obedient-line because I'm SO about having a lot of individuality-destroying, oppressive shit all over my forum.

Ripping off Apex

Discussion in 'Critique & Feedback' started by Duncan Formosa, Apr 3, 2023.

  1. I've been trying to study the orchestration for Mike's piece "Apex" (which can be heard in the live brass class.)

I quite liked this piece despite Mike saying that it didn't really achieve what it was supposed to do which is the typical "epic" brass with 12 horns etc but with a smaller section.

Anyway, I thought the best way to try and learn more is to try and use what I learned by writing a new piece and heavily lifting from it. That way I can fuck it up and ACTUALLY learn.

Had wrote the whole piece on piano first with the idea of which orchestration ideas I was going to use, but when I got to writing it in musescore I realised some of the notes were out of range for the instruments so I had to change things here and there. Maybe not as effective as the original but I definitely think I learned a thing or two.

Let me know what you think!

  2. I actually like this a little better than Apex, especially how you handled the crescendo at 1:01 and there seems to be more dynamic depth. good job.
