No problem, just send me (Mike) a Conversation message and I'll get you sorted, by which I mean hammered-into-obedient-line because I'm SO about having a lot of individuality-destroying, oppressive shit all over my forum.

Piano Concerto Slow Movement w/ score

Discussion in 'Critique & Feedback' started by Stephen Limbaugh, Jan 26, 2023.

  1. Rough and dirty mockup... runs about 8mins. Comments welcome!

  2. Beautiful piece!
For the first three minutes, I was pretty sure that this is not a movement in a "piano concerto". Hmmm ... a concerto is a piece that shows off the performer's virtuosity, and it's not there. It simply sounds like a piece for string orchestra and piano. Then, suddenly around three minutes the piano begins a cadenza, and then it becomes a true piano concerto. A concerto can also be a "battle" between the soloist and the orchestra (This is what I learned years ago from the book "Mozart and his piano concertos" by Girdlestone and Buechner.) Obviously, this could be a bit controversial!

I love lush orchestra combined with piano, and you certainly have it here! The only thing I didn't appreciate much is the sound effect in the last minute and a half or so. I can't read the names of the instruments in the score, but I suppose it's some playback of ocean waves and bird calls. Sorry--it just sounds trite to my ears.

The playback realism (using some virtual instruments, I assume?) is beautiful. I love it!

  3. Thank you! Yeah the other movements are much more focused on the virtuosity of the soloist... most of the top pianists could get this movement in a couple tries, but the others are quite a bit more difficult.

I posted the 3rd movement a while back here if you're interested:

Samples are all from Vienna Symphonic Library. :)
