1. Didja accidentally blow through the whole, "We're using our real names" thing on registration? No problem, just send me (Mike) a Conversation message and I'll get you sorted, by which I mean hammered-into-obedient-line because I'm SO about having a lot of individuality-destroying, oppressive shit all over my forum.

  1. Hi everyone,
I'm pretty new here, I bought a few masterclasses during the sale and I'm really happy I did!
I discovered Mike not so long ago and I really love his teaching method!

Anyway, I've been stuck with a sound I wasn't really happy with for a LONG LONG time. I had a conversation with a friend who has a sound that's really close to what I've been after for so long(a very Williams/Horner/Goldsmith/80's,90's roomy hollywood soundtrack sound). I decided to change a lot of things in my approach(which was dry instruments only).
Black friday arrived on time, I changed a few of my instruments and started to use some I had for a long time but couldn't use it in a "dry only" method.
I also was using MIR Pro(which I'm getting rid of now) or IR-1(which I used for 6 or 7 years) and decided I needed some change.

After studying The Race and reading the score, I decided to try to balance and premix my new template by trying to be close to the sound of the recording. Only the first 30 seconds as we hear pretty much everything.
I'm really curious to read your feedbacks on that!

    here's the link

I know there are some things I can enhance but I'll fine tune all of this while working on some original music^^
Don't hesitate, I only want to get better.

    Jeremie.

ps: Thanks a lot for all your videos and masterclasses, Mike! I wish I discovered your channel a few years ago!!

  2. Hi,

First thought: Pretty cool and must be a lot of work to do this.

Second thought: Try less reverb. I am pretty sure that it would sound a way better without that soopy verb and would definitely be closer to the recording. Try to use a reverb but very settle instead.

Happy programming and good luck! \m/

  3. Thank you, I'll definitely try that!!
I started to write some original music keeping that very template to I'll tweak the reverb on that new track.
It sounds pretty good without any additional reverb btw!

Anyway, it was not that much work, it's only two pages and a half so it was pretty fast to program(except the brass parts, SM brass takes longer than the other VIs I use), the longest part was to create the template and to balance everything from scratch.
But this few 17 bars were reaaaaally interesting orchestration wise!

I also got confonted to one of my weaknesses... Bb instruments... Horns are alright, Violas no worries but those clarinets and trumpets took me longer. I started to work on that a bit every day so I become fluent with transposing instruments!
