No problem, just send me (Mike) a Conversation message and I'll get you sorted, by which I mean hammered-into-obedient-line because I'm SO about having a lot of individuality-destroying, oppressive shit all over my forum.

  1. Hey again everyone! Hope you're all doin well.
I've come a ways on this piece and have been really enjoying the work, I would very much appreciate any critique :) Thanks again!

  2. Hi Joe,

I feel like the melody could use some more consistency, particularly in its rhythm. Your melody follows a specific rhythm when it is introduced at 0:03, but you change that rhythm at 0:09, 0:15, and 0:21.

One topic that Mike brings up in the Unleashed series is that the average music listener wants to listen to music that makes them feel smart, and a big part of this is giving the listener the ability to predict what's next.

I don't feel that many listeners would expect the rhythm changes happening at the beginning of your piece, and they could cause some frustration for the listener.

I suggest giving your melody a more consistent rhythm and simplifying it. I think there was something good in there that you were trying to express, but the rhythm changes give it a muddled effect, even when you return to the entire sequence at 0:52.

As for the section from 1:17-2:05, it almost feels like it's from a different piece - I can't tie it back to the earlier section, and the chords feel a bit random.

Lastly, I'm not keen on the orchestration. It sounds like you've got a Rhodes doing a bossa nova rhythm, but the melody is coming from a very delicate piano where you can practically hear the player's fingers hitting the keys. I'll defer to others here for specifics on what would fit better, but I'm thinking a more loud/confident piano or maybe a flute could work.

    I hope this was helpful!

  3. This was super helpful thanks so much! I honestly thought my melody's rhythm was the same repeated but listening more closely it definitely could use refining hahah. And yes the orchestration absolutely will change, I actually only used one patch to write this up as simply as possible but it can sound pretty different with different registers, I understand now.
Thanks very much for your time and advice :)
