1. Didja accidentally blow through the whole, "We're using our real names" thing on registration? No problem, just send me (Mike) a Conversation message and I'll get you sorted, by which I mean hammered-into-obedient-line because I'm SO about having a lot of individuality-destroying, oppressive shit all over my forum.

My first little orchestral piece (a demo for a film)

  1. Ok, so after many years of studying and many tests (in the meantime I did some songs and continued to study) I was contacted by a director who asked for a demo..
In the end he didn't give me that job but I'm happy anyway because it was an opportunity for me to measure a bit of what I'm able to do and to begin understanding how really is talking with a director and business and so on.

So I did this little orchestral piece. Was for a little adventure of some crazy people in the desert, so it should sound funny.

I know the sounds are crappy because I could only use Logic's sounds (my Mac had many problems and now is really really slow and can't even handle free VTSs.. ahah) PLUS I'm not a great mix engineer and did some/many mixing mistakes

Anyway this is my music, just a little beginning, just something I did without earning money
Always grateful for this music passion and for everything I learned here thanks to Mike and everyone of you in these years

  2. It's a concise idea that's short and straight to the point. My main criticism is I feel distracted by the drums - partly due to how dry they are in the mix and also how they are performed (timing).

  3. Thank you!! Ok, so those drums are a part I added later because I wanted to release that piece as a single on streaming platforms. So since what I understood is that for a single they want at least 1 minute long, I added that drums part and the last repeated version.

In any case the production of this was really a nightmare. I wrote it in few hours, but it took 1 entire week to adjust every single note because my Mac gave me really a lot of problems and now it's super slow, so it recorded bad and with help of quantisation and manually adjust I had that result.
Yes, sometimes there is some out of time notes, but after all the editing I couldn't do more than this.

PLUS I hadn't set the negative delay and I couldn't use better sounds cause of Mac problems...
About the mix was my mistake, I could not use good sounds so I took the Logic Drums plugin, but I mixed them in a bad way because I'm not mix engineer and I have little experience mixing. Plus I spent most of the time adjusting those notes...

*About releasing a SINGLE on platforms, how much time it's needed for the distributor to release it? Because now it's 10 days I uploaded on my distributor site and that track hasn'tbeen released yet... (It's only 1 song.)

  4. Ciao Daniele,

It might take up to a couple of weeks to upload to streaming platforms.
regarding the composition itself, I would try to reduce everything to a piano piece. In that way it will be self evident where you have weak points in terms of structure and dynamics.

    Cheers.

  5. Ciao Nicoo!! :)
Yeah, now after 12 days it's being uploaded on services. I thought was only few days some years ago, but maybe I remember wrong.

I know what you mean but the problem in this composition I think is the mixing (mostly because I couldn't use better sounds and I was forced to use Logic's library sounds, but also because mixing is not my strenght. I'm a composer and songwriter, so I try to do good mixes but it's not my thing).
Then the other prblem is that since Apple sold me a computer (new) that after few years began to break one thing after another, despite the huge price I paid, now I'm with a computer that works with kind of 4 cores of 0,8 Hz that I can't adjust because with those "little" money I could buy a PC with Windows that is even more powerful ahahahah But I haven't that money now, so..

Anyway when I record in Logic it does a mess with notes and was a nightmare to adjust it. That's the main reason now in that piece there are still notes just a bit out of time. For sure I did some mistakes myself, but if the Apple computers were good product then I could use the Spitfire BBC free and all would have been simpler and better sounding. (just recrod, and semi-quantize with the right negative delay set on each track and you're done. But my Mac now can't even handle free vst's or kontakt or izotope elements and so on. I can only use Logic sounds and plugins and that was the result.
A decent track I think, but not super professional.

Probably now the best thing is to semi-quantize everything and I have to use freeze mode on tracks or bounce each midi track just after I recorded it. I was able to do a good song with this very low quality computer so I can still do a good work, but it's slow and really time consuming.
