1. Didja accidentally blow through the whole, "We're using our real names" thing on registration? No problem, just send me (Mike) a Conversation message and I'll get you sorted, by which I mean hammered-into-obedient-line because I'm SO about having a lot of individuality-destroying, oppressive shit all over my forum.

Improving my Unleashed Submission

Discussion in 'Critique & Feedback' started by Andrew McAfee, Dec 23, 2021.

  1. Hi all! My submission got criticized for being unpredictable harmonically, and I want to work on it! The moment Mike said that was on one of my favorite 4 chord loops I've come up with, and I want to try to find the most musical way to adapt it, and I'd like some advice from the community.

The loop goes from the iii-7 back to itself and what I did was:
    A-7 Abdim7 G-7 Bb-6 back to A-7 (for a iii-vi-ii-V in F)
The piece is called 'Float' so I wanted all harmonic motion to "fall slowly" (so chords move with descending half step motion).

My current thoughts on ways to improve it (please weigh in on this!)
    1) Repeat that cycle more often
    2) Put it over bass notes with consistent direction (C B Bb Bb A)
    3) Introduce each of those harmonic devices earlier in the piece as a pair
    4) Just don't...haha
    5) Change one or more chords to something more common

This part comes up in the 9th bar of each A section...so maybe the solution is just don't go there so early and use this in a development?
