1. Didja accidentally blow through the whole, "We're using our real names" thing on registration? No problem, just send me (Mike) a Conversation message and I'll get you sorted, by which I mean hammered-into-obedient-line because I'm SO about having a lot of individuality-destroying, oppressive shit all over my forum.

First transcription - Dragon Racing - John Powell - I need tips!

  1. Hey guys,

    first post here.
I got a whole lot of good information already, thanks a lot for that!

However I just started out transcribing after watching Harmony 1, as Mike stated how important transcribing would be.
So I chose my favorite track (Dragon Racing) for my first try, as I found the score in the resources subforum (YES!!).

Sooo, I loaded the track up in Cubase and decided to start with the short intro. I transcribed the main line, that was easy. Seems like a c major scale. Cool! Maybe around 64bpm.
Next I wanted to get the strings sorted, as they seem to provide the foundation. So I looped the first bar without the timpani roll.
Ha! And there I got stuck. No way to hear what the strings do. Basses are playing a long C, but the rest? Some 16th spiccato stuff. Mhhh.

I timestretched the piece to 3/4th and to half the speed. There I kind of get some notes. I then rolled off bottom end with an EQ. Still quite hard. I fiddled around like half an hour with the piano but couldn't get any more out of it.
I assume those are Violas with some Violins coming in towars the end of the bar or they already play and get louder.

Im quite tempted right now to just look it up in the score as I can't seem to get more out of it.
Do you have any tips for me how I can maybe squeeze out some more notes?
What tricks or techniques helped you the most to hear what is going on?

    Thanks for your advice! :)

PS: heres a link to the track:

    Up to second five... *lol*

I'd say, don't worry too much about EXACTLY what those short strings and inner voices are doing. Just get all the main stuff down first. Figure out all the harmonic changes and basic rhythms. write out the main melodies and the counter lines, all the ones that are obvious and stick out to you. Then worry about all the other stuff. Alternatively, it might actually be wiser and more productive, to start with a simpler track. One that doesn't have so many changes and so much stuff going on all over the place.

I'd suggest something like this. Just start with the first 2 minutes or so, beginning from 0:30 seconds in..

  3. I'm curious of what everybody hears for the strings to see the differences. If there's no differences it would mean the simpliest is the truest otherwise it could lead to an interesting "why you did this" discussion. :)

  4. Not a transcription, but an "impression". I clicked on the clip you provided, and only listened once. I do agree with Philip that a less dense score would serve you much better. That said...... it sounds like mostly C-G-D's. I don't know how to explain other than to say I hear 5ths, and also deductively it makes sense as those are the open strings and this lets fast things be very easily executed. ...... OH fuck it...... one second ...... let me splat down what the "gist" I heard. JP always divides shit in funky ways so this only point in the general direction.....

It goes higher and into the violins and I am sure he has some pedals. I only listened once. Please don't make me listen again.
I have an aversion to all the modal - hero stuff.
