1. Didja accidentally blow through the whole, "We're using our real names" thing on registration? No problem, just send me (Mike) a Conversation message and I'll get you sorted, by which I mean hammered-into-obedient-line because I'm SO about having a lot of individuality-destroying, oppressive shit all over my forum.

Ergonomics -- Where to spend money

Discussion in 'Current Gear' started by Rohann van Rensburg, Dec 12, 2023.

  1. The "Studio Chair" thread got me thinking:
For those that have done countless hours in chairs at a studio desk, where do you find money spent to be worth it? @Mike Verta mentioned the Aeron chair being worth the investment, I assume because it's highly customizable and doesn't lose structural integrity over time. What about keyboards, mouse, etc? The only time I've spent 10-12h a day in a chair was writing papers in university and I had significant problems with my forearm extensors as a result of the crap keyboards, along with predictable knee and back pain from extensive periods sitting.

  2. For me, one of the best purchases I've made is the stream deck. I've become a lot faster in working since I got it. The main advantage is having all your keyboard shortcuts for different software easily mapped and labelled to 1 button press, so I'm not having to memories keyboard shortcuts or hit ctrl+shift whatever.

You can also set up multi actions so one button can set off a whole list of commands. I've found this very useful when I'm working as an assistant editor, since before I got the stream deck, I was doing a lot of repetitive mouse movements which really hurt my wrist.

  3. Oh interesting. Do you have some examples of shortcuts and multi actions? Does the streamdeck automatically swap between programs if you were to alt-tab between them?

  5. Yes. It would be much less usable if it didn't.

In case you're not sure that you want to spend the money on a Streamdeck, Elgato also have apps for mobile that give you Streamdeck functionality on your device, which you could use to see if the actual hardware could work for you.

  6. Awesome! Thanks for the video. I didn't realize it was that thorough. @Frank Wales I've used a Streamdeck before but purely for live stuff (light switching, slide presentations, video, etc), not in a desktop setting. Didn't realize it had this much functionality, will definitely consider.

Any other ergonomics tips? Keyboards, mice, chair options (if anything other than the Aeron), desk/piano setup, etc?
