Confused about String reverbs and ER

  1. Did Mike really explain this, I seem to have missed it. I understood that they are supposed to be drier but am still confused about setup. Mike said that he splits the channels into violins, violas, cellos and basses and that he does not use Haas ER for these groups. Also that violins are hard left and cellos hard right.
    But are they all summed into one string channel with both ER and reverb and perhaps also EQ curve or do we give them all individual reverbs and ER's ?
    Do we then also do multiple sends between them to recreate this natural microphone bleed that would occur between them?
    Should we then also do string sends to the flute, horn and trombone/trumpet reverbs ?

  2. For strings, I give each section group its own EQ.

    When it comes to bleed between sections, you sort of need to do it all the way or not at all. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't, sort of depending on my mood or the particular libraries I use, but when I do inter-section bleed, I reference my real live stems for just how much strings end up in, say, the woods and vice-versa. And I just send the various groups' effected signals around. Done right, this can really lend an interesting sound - done incorrectly, it can kill imaging, and make EQ'ing very difficult, because if you've boosted or cut something from a section to make it sound more natural, then that EQ'd version will sum into another section which might have a contrary or fighting EQ. In a real session, the EQ's are (largely) natural, and the instruments just work and work together so you don't run into this.
