No problem, just send me (Mike) a Conversation message and I'll get you sorted, by which I mean hammered-into-obedient-line because I'm SO about having a lot of individuality-destroying, oppressive shit all over my forum.

Classical vs. Commercial - String Quartet In F minor

Discussion in 'Critique & Feedback' started by Joshua Mallard, Jul 15, 2017.

  1. Hello all! Right here is my first piece for string quartet. I know that the title of this thread hints at some kind of academic snobbery, but that's actually not the case:)

As of recently, I have entered university and my school's program is very "contemporary". Much of the program leans towards the trend of atonality in new music from academia. While this is all well in good in its own way, there is really a strong divide between music academia and commercial music (Film, Game, Television, and even concert band). I obviously enjoy more of the music from guys like Williams and Mike, or other great composers. In this string quartet, I've taken what I've learned about development from Comp 1, Comp 2, and Theminator, and tried to adapt it to a classical string quartet movement.

    Thank you for any feedback.

  2. I'm by no means an expert on string quartets. So I believe I can't criticize this constructively. But it is a treat listening to this. I'm enjoying myself. There are some things I could say though. I feel like I'm hearing the main melody way too much. It becomes overbearing. You need to work better on variating the first part of your theme I'd say as you seem to be good at variations. Plus possibly the transition at 2:06 could have been smoother, more musical.
