Arch Villain Fantasy Orchestral Theme with a story

Discussion in 'Critique & Feedback' started by Marko Dvojkovic, Jun 24, 2021.

  1. Here is a short piece I made that afterwards made me picture a little story that could go with it.
I could picture a scene where we meet for the first time the main antagonist that is presented in a bit scary manner. There is some scheming going on in the dark between some creatures, maybe we are not at first sure how dangerous it is. And then suddenly something trivial enrages the antagonist so much that he shows his true face and power causing terrible and massive destruction. Then when the trumpets enter I could imagine maybe his huge army rising up from nowhere that he commands with a snap of fingers so there is even something majestic and impressive in that sight.
I am curious what you think about that.
Any other feedback also of course is welcome.
    Cheers!

I think you do a lot of things right like having a consistent pattern through out the piece for example which make it easy to follow.
The only thing I feel like the piece needs is more variety of the texture/color. The only change is at 0:42 but I think it would make the piece more interesting with a few changes in texture here and there in those 42 seconds. It doesn't have to be a total change in texture just a few hints here and there maybe. For example instead of using all the instruments at once you could use some of the instruments and then introuduce the other instruments as the piece goes on. You could also introduce the instruments as the music gets louder.
But you did a really great job regarding everything else.

  3. Hey @Bjarke Tan, thanks for giving it a listen and for your comment!
That is a fair point, but also my kind of preference, at least in this stage of my creative life. I kind of like simple and clear orchestration, especially when the main melodic ideas are being introduced. In that stage of the piece I always feel that too much change of colors makes it harder for the audience to acknowledge the musical ideas being presented. And I sometimes deliberately try to see for how much time can I get away with the same "color set" I picked. But yeah it is a balance of musical and orchestrational development if I may put it that way. Now of course there is surely a perfect balance that better orchestrators than me could nail so that the change of colors doesn't detract from carving the melodic material in peoples minds.
At 0:25 I introduced violas and cellos and then dropped woods completely and the harp starts to arpeggiate at 0:28, it is pretty subtle, but it's there.
