4/2 Time Signature

  1. I just got the score for Barber's Adagio and the first thing I noticed, it's mostly written in 4/2 . Why did they do that? Wouldn't a regular 4/4 be easier to read? Of course you'd end up with twice as many bars but I don't see that as a deal breaker.

This made me wonder, 4/4 half time would be pretty much the same thing to 4/2, except that the bars would split in the middle, while it's exactly the same thing to 2/2, if such thing even exists :) Is this correct?

  2. The shortest explanation is that it suggests a feel in terms of tempo and phrasing to the conductor and players that the composer (Barber) is looking for.
