1. Didja accidentally blow through the whole, "We're using our real names" thing on registration? No problem, just send me (Mike) a Conversation message and I'll get you sorted, by which I mean hammered-into-obedient-line because I'm SO about having a lot of individuality-destroying, oppressive shit all over my forum.

“IT” theme structure

Discussion in 'Tips, Tricks & Talk' started by Samuel Diaz, Jan 6, 2018.

  1. I’m pretty decent at figuring out structures but this piece puzzles me a little. Maybe I’m over thinking it, but what form does this take? I know he recycles parts here and there and eventually repeats the whole thing but the first couple of parts are a little confusing.

    Any thoughts?

  2. Well it's pretty clear what the anchor is, isn't it? The the rhythm and shape of the line(s). Beyond that, this is typical of many film cues in that it is not particularly self-supporting. It probably sets the mood and follows the picture perfectly well, but it does not have its own cohesive structure. It just wanders until it stops. Without looking, you would have no idea where you were in the piece; how long it was going to be, etc. as a result. Good? Bad? Depends?

  3. Thanks Mike! You made a great point, I didn’t think of the track in the context of the film. I quite like the piece and it seems pretty popular on youtube so in analyzing it I was trying to see if the structure had much to do with it’s popularity but you brought up something else I didn’t think about which is the anchor it establishes. Thank you!

  4. It's too bad, there are some simple gems in there that would have been easy to repeat and could have worked well as a main motif. Could have easily been structured in a more conventional manner and likely would have been slightly more memorable.
