1. Didja accidentally blow through the whole, "We're using our real names" thing on registration? No problem, just send me (Mike) a Conversation message and I'll get you sorted, by which I mean hammered-into-obedient-line because I'm SO about having a lot of individuality-destroying, oppressive shit all over my forum.

Could there be more elaboration on the outlining chords aspect?

Discussion in 'The Theminator' started by Adam Alake, Dec 26, 2017.

  1. I watched the video yesterday and when @Mike Verta asked the class if everything is clear so far, I found myself wanting to yell "No!" and hoped someone would raise relevant questions, but alas, nobody did, and the rest of the class was spent on developing these phrases which I am unsure of how to properly form - very frustrating.

Regarding making 4-8 bar phrases/themes that the average person will connect with:

    1. Use a simple pattern/motif - I get that.
    2. Contrast through scalewise and intervalic motion - I also understand that.
    3. Outline the underlying chords - I cannot quite internalise the exact meaning of this.

So, what I think I got from that, was that it is of utmost importance what the underlying chords are - it must be a progression that people are conditioned to recognise, like the I - IV - V. Is that correct?

@Mike Verta Showed an example where his melody pointed towards a simple progression, but the underlying chords were actually different, an example of how to reel the audience in even further. Is that something to be done on the first "revelation" of the phrase/theme, or is that only in further development?

Then there is the actual outlining aspect, is it related to strong and weak beats at all? E.g., the notes that fall on the strong beats should be the chord tones which will suggest the chord change?

There was also a mention of how elegant voice leading should inform us of how to outline the progression, does that refer to how when you play one of these common chord progressions on the piano, there is always a way to play them by only moving one or two fingers at a time, and thus these shape changes will identify the notes to include in the melody to strongly suggest the chord change, a.k.a shifting the pattern so it lands on these notes?

@Mike Verta , I would deeply appreciate some clarification on this, a short video with specific examples of melodies outlining chords with an explanation of why and how they do it would be golden, but even a text reply would be enough.

As it is the class has left me more unsure of everything than before watching.

I wrote a few basic melodies trying to integrate the concepts, am I on the right track at all?

  3. Adam, I don't know if this can help, but I did a couple of Youtube vids (nicknamed Farkle Fridays) where I talk about developing a theme, generating an idea, and I walk through some themes I wrote for a low budget feature I just did. I've attached some links below: I think the relevant vids I did are Vare and Theme-i-ations part 1, and 2, generating an idea, and writing an 8 bar theme. I'm similar in age and background to Mike (grew up in the 80's), so my loves are similar to his (Back to the Future, E.T., Star Wars, Star Trek, etc)

I hope these help! Mike, please let me know if this is not appropriate, I'll pull them down.

  4. Thanks Mike, I sorta fell out of the loop with Farkle Fridays due to the uneven schedule, so I missed these. Will watch and see what I learn.

  5. Ah, thanks, man. I hope it helped you out for some composing ideas and strategies!

    Mike
