Short Piece for Strings

Discussion in 'Critique & Feedback' started by Claude Ruelle, Jun 19, 2019.

  1. Hi everyone,

Here's a short piece that started as a piano improv. I feel like I'm sometimes struggling with harmonic coherence and continuity. Let me know your thoughts.

    Thanks,
    Claude

  2. I love that final resolution. Nice! I do not think you have a problem with harmonic continuity. If anything, a little more variety of harmonic content could possibly help the piece. You have good instincts, in my opinion, when you worry about harmonic coherence. There are a few places where the lack of harmonic motion risks losing the listener. If meant to be a media piece, the visuals could make a huge difference. As it stands this is a very good "setting the mood" sort of piece.

  3. Thank you so much for your feedback!

I think that what I was worried about was the modulation to C major at around 00:54 - It felt like I had to force it with the II V

I know that a lot of jazz composers and arrangers use II Vs and modulate like that all over the place, but they somehow do it much more eloquently.

I simply need to transcribe more of that idiom

  4. I think the section starting at 54 sec is fine. I just listened again, and around 30 sec is where I started to notice a lack of harmonic variety. But perhaps it is just me. Well, I just listened a third time, and I really think you need to spice up the harmonies at 30, and also near the end before your final resolution. Too much repetition of the same chord changes in my opinion. The section at 54 sec wroks very well for me. Hopefully, someone else will provide some feedback. I wouldn't worry about it if I am the only one.

  5. Listened back to it - I am starting to get your point. This is why it is so good to get someone else's perspective on your music.

    Thanks again!

  6. Very nice piece, but at some point I feel taht all this is like all a unique part of music, without part B.
For example at 0,41 (or also at 0,57 if you prefer) I really needed a change to a part B (or something like a Chorus, you know?)
My ears needed at that point to hear something different, some development.

Howerver the firts minute is awesome for me.

  7. I really enjoyed your piece...very nice harmonic movements. The one thing I wish is that were more anchors. Maybe a couple of repeats before the resolutions or modulations.
    Anyway, great work!
