1. Didja accidentally blow through the whole, "We're using our real names" thing on registration? No problem, just send me (Mike) a Conversation message and I'll get you sorted, by which I mean hammered-into-obedient-line because I'm SO about having a lot of individuality-destroying, oppressive shit all over my forum.

  1. Voiceless Verta Video? Vexing.

  2. Alright, don't practice your alliteration on me....

  3. A fair request. Standing down.

Thanks for sharing the video. Spent a while trying to get some of the bits at 2:00-2:20 under my fingers. There are some textures in there I want to put in my own vocabulary, so I'll be coming back to this one for sure. I just have to drag the window down so the keys are off screen to avoid too much cheating while transcribing. :)

  4. A lot to love in this video Mike. Play the tune, deconstruct the major elements, some evaluation of your chord/voicing selection process, and for people that have viewed your other material, you can hear the Mike-isms in your facial expressions.

Bonus for brevity. Not much needs to be said, so it (no dialog) is effective because it compels the listener to pay attention.

My favorite chord subs in there:
    BbM9 for tonic
Gm7b5 sounds great (half dim is so flexible)
    Eb#11 for ii

  5. Wonderful video, Mike. Inspired me to do something similar, just improvised a bit :)

  6. I once saw Nigel Tufnel do a "Guitar Face" masterclass.

Nice to know pianist have them too.

You almost went full Groucho Marx.

  7. Subtlety. That's the key.

  8. Every second you spent on this was well-spent! Good on you for following the impulse, and good on you for working it out - beats watching a hundred YouTube videos or reading about it!

  9. Thanks @Mike Verta , that's how I usually try to develop my ideas, I just need to be more aware of it and make better use of it - it's hard to take the time when we're having to chunk out music :) I have a question for you (or anyone else, that is): as I'm seeing John Williams live in person (probably the only chance in a lifetime) conducting the Vienna Philharmonic in a little over a week, I was wondering whether you have any tips I should try to take in during the performance, from any aspect?

    Cheers

  10. @Mike Verta : Please continue this "wordless improvisation" "series". I'd love to see more. Something about the purely "showing" without the telling was immensely effective in conveying the idea that it needs to be put under one's fingers to become meaningful. Ended up playing with it for an hour already and am continuing to explore it.
