No problem, just send me (Mike) a Conversation message and I'll get you sorted, by which I mean hammered-into-obedient-line because I'm SO about having a lot of individuality-destroying, oppressive shit all over my forum.

Danny Elfman "Goosebumps" Mockup !

Discussion in 'Critique & Feedback' started by Emmanuel Rousseau, Jul 22, 2018.

  1. Hello everyone,

First post here ! I've created an account on Redbanned for quite some time now, but somehow never went further. Hopefully that's done now, and I'm sure this is a great place to learn and practice :)

I'd like to present my latest mockup, which is a cover from the "Goosebumps" main theme, by Danny Elfman. I've transcribed everything by ear, which turned out to be a fantastic exercice for me.

If interested, you can also compare it to the original piece, mixed by Dennis Sands at Fox Studios.

All feedback and critique is appreciated ! Thanks :)

  3. Wow, great job! I think you are spot on with the orchestration, at least to my ears. What libraries are you using?

  4. @Sylvain Provenzano : Thank you Sylvain !

    @Haakon Davidsen : Thanks :) I used the following libraries :

Percussions : Metropolis Ark 2 & 3 (except the Piattis, which are from Spitfire HZ01)
Strings : Metropolis Ark 1, 2 & 3, layered with Berlin First Chairs - and a touch of Spitfire Tundra at the very end
Brass : Berlin Brass, with some guests from Metropolis Ark 1 & 3
Woodwinds : Metropolis Ark 2 & 3, layered with VSL Woodwinds SE
    Choir : Metropolis Ark 1 & 2
Additional Instruments : Glockenspiel, Harp & Xylophone are from 8Dio AGE. Electronic Percs are from Tundra's "Brunel Loops" and Heavyocity DM307. And last but not least, the Theremin is from Soundiron :)

  5. Great work on the track, and wonderful mix / mastering. Was this "out of the box" or did you do additional processing?

@Paul T McGraw : Thank you Paul ! There is additional processing, but really not much : I tried to keep things really simple for this one.

The mix is almost only Console & Tape saturation, and tiny EQ moves. I would say 90% of the processing comes from the Mastering, which is :

    1. Multiband Envelop Shaper : just to tighten the lows a bit, other bands are bypassed.
    2. Console Emulation
    3. Additional EQ for the subs and low-mids.
    4. Tape Saturation
    5. "Glue" reverb
    6. SSL-Bus style compression
    7. A touch of multiband compression between 3k and 6k for some "harsh" frequencies
    8. Limiter

    That's it :)
