No problem, just send me (Mike) a Conversation message and I'll get you sorted, by which I mean hammered-into-obedient-line because I'm SO about having a lot of individuality-destroying, oppressive shit all over my forum.

A man on a mission

  1. Hi!

Tried to do a classic secret agent theme.

This is my third post in a short time, but I have a lot of unfinished songs that I want to complete (My New Years resolution is to finish all the songs I've started on).

    Hope you like it.

    Libraries I used:
Woodwinds: Berlin Woodwinds Revive & Hollywoodwinds
Brass: Berlin Brass & Project Sam Swing More!
Percussion: Cineperc & Orchestral Tools The Timpani
    Piano: Cinematic Studio Piano
    Strings: Cinematic Studio Strings
    Bass: Project Sam Swing
    Guitar: Played by me

  2. First impressions: good job! I think this is my favorite piece of yours so far!

Comments, after only a few listens (in no particular order):
    - Perfectly capable piece. Nails the vibe, good mix and is overall enjoyable and pleasant to listen to.
    - I thought a couple of times that adding a few more flourishes here and there (particularly in the trumpets, so rip ups, flutter notes, shakes, bends, falls, etc) could add that last 10% of spice.
    - There passage at 2:02 could perhaps use a little more funk, now the brass stabs are just playing what the guitar is doing but an octave higher, I think you could do some cool clustered chords in the brass instead, make it a little funkier/jazzier (you can still keep the original brass notes in those chords, just add some minor thirds, seconds or 7ths).
    - In conclusion: I like this piece though I think you can push it another 10%. Still, this is already very solid and I can tell that this style is playing to your strong suits... at least I think it is, considering you've played in the guitar bit. Structurally it's much easier to follow than the Darks Adventure (which wasn't that hard to follow by the way, but this piece flows better in my view). In my opinion you can jazz it up just a smidge more, or you can put it to rest and just move on to the next piece, because this is pretty solid and it never does well to linger too long on any piece.

  3. Hi! Thank you! I am very glad with the result, so I am happy you enjoyed it too.

Coming from an rock music background, it is always fun to play surf-guitar!

Adding more notes in that passage is a good idea. And do some more funket brass stuff. I might explore that. My plan was to move on to the next piece for now, but maybe I’ll go back and do some editing later. Thanks for your feedback!

  4. Cool piece! Some thoughts based on a couple of listens:

Give me that snare, man! Come on! A little louder, some mild high attack compression and a tad more bright should do it.

You missed your first chance for counterpoint at 0:12 where you can have descending 16th triplet horns in the same rhythm. Don't have to the same notes, but you get the idea.

Your second chance was quickly after that, at 0:23 where you can squeeze in whatever (bones?) between the guitar figures. Do the same at 0:35 (maybe trumpets this time? High cellos? Whatever). Also write the counterlines for the same parts in the repeat of the melody at the end.

Also again, I'd bring the horns it at 1:13 doing an extended version of the rhythmic motif here before the strings take over. Put them a bit lower so they contrast with their own higher lines in the following part.

Write in some shorts at 1:53. Enhance the main bass rhythm. Could be horns and then it moves across the brass, or even strings Like

I'd add in descending shorts in this same figure at 2:03 and expand them harmonically when the trumpets come in a few seconds later. Now you just add beefed-up counterlines between guitar figures like I explained above and you're set!
