Hidden Gems...

Discussion in 'Score Study Resources' started by Mike Worth, Jul 6, 2017.

  1. Hi, Ladies and Gentlemen!

I was watching some classic movies, and I kept stumbling across excellent scores, composed by legendary composers, that kind of got "lost in the mists of time", as tastes and industry focuses (foci?) change. Nothing wrong with that, but I'm a person that tries to listen to great music, well composed, well orchestrated, well developed, whenever possible.

So, I thought it would be fun to start a "hidden gems" thread. Excellent scores by "household name" composers, that have fallen through the cracks.

Today, I watched an old 80's family adventure film, "Harry and the Hendersons". Cute film, charming ending. Really heartwarming score by Bruce Broughton (Homeward Bound, Silverado).

Man, Bruce knows how to shift moods at a moments notice, and can do so so elegantly. He is able to capture these warm, intimate moments with great string writing, and he can suddenly drop into a warm, tender moment with beautifully crafted solo woodwind moment. He writes intimate solo wind moments so well! Just a great composer, and writes such great family friendly scores.

Here is a medley of some of the film tracks.

Anyways, I hope you enjoy this, there are some wonderful orchestral moments in this, and Bruce can write warm family music like a pro.

    Be well, everyone!

  3. Oh, yeah, one of Elmer's great scores... and a great score to transcribe! I did a couple of these cues years ago... so excellent! :)

    Thank you for the post!
