No problem, just send me (Mike) a Conversation message and I'll get you sorted, by which I mean hammered-into-obedient-line because I'm SO about having a lot of individuality-destroying, oppressive shit all over my forum.

Black n White Silent Film Cue

Discussion in 'Critique & Feedback' started by Phillip J. Faddoul, Oct 3, 2017.

  1. This cue is still a WIP, for a short I'm working on. Set in the 30's. The film is black and white and silent, a la Chaplin. Certainly a fun challange!

  2. Sweet ! Good stuff man.

  3. Great piece!

I also like the "old" vibe, overall muted and narrow mix. In regards to that, trombones are sticking out a bit, they're "more to the right" than stuff that's normally to the left is to the left, if you get what I'm saying. For consistency's sake, I would either move the bones more towards the center or move stuff that should be left slightly more to the left. Even with the current placement of the trombones, the overall feel of the "old recording" isn't compromised, so if you match that, I feel like it would sound better, but still maintain the vibe. And also, the mallets seem to be bright and airy compared to the rest, so I'd suggest the same thing - bring them down in their high freqs (logical choice, a steep filter at ~14khz should do) or bring everything else up (might compromise your vibe).

It might be that it's still WIP to the point you haven't bothered to look at this and/or fix it, but since you've gone through the effort to make everything sound oldschool, I though I'd just point it out :D

  4. Nice. At 1:10 try horns (or horns+pizz vl). It'll setup the return of woods better. Overall, you are working your way through the harmonies well. Your next field of research is more sophisticated jazz tonalities, as composers of the day had, to give you more places to go and make it even more engaging. That said, you should definitely mark this as a sign of gaining clear control over your work. Congrats!

  6. I'll definitely take a look at that stuff once I get on to mixing. Thanks Aaron.
