1. Didja accidentally blow through the whole, "We're using our real names" thing on registration? No problem, just send me (Mike) a Conversation message and I'll get you sorted, by which I mean hammered-into-obedient-line because I'm SO about having a lot of individuality-destroying, oppressive shit all over my forum.

Ads on RedBanned?

This site does not need ads in any way and never will. In fact the only thing it needs is you.

I want to support and encourage good developers. And if they're here, they know this is a no-bullshit hang - this isn't a "safe space." It's a real space, with real people giving real opinions; opinions which they would be wise to listen to, better or worse. That's at the core of what this site is about. The Red Band is a reminder that contents inside are not only for adult people, but adult attitudes, and if we're all friends and in this together, why that should be just fine, shouldn't it? We all get bent out of shape sometimes, but we work it out. That's life.

But I don't like ad banners, generally. I'm not 100% opposed to them, I just don't like them. And I don't like the idea of our place being used as a .gif dumping ground. One thing I like which I'm probably going to add is something used regularly on VFX community sites: Featured Banners, picked by the site admins, and for threads/posts/stuff which the members like/has a lot of heat on it. So for example if, out of hundreds of posts a day, one artist puts up an especially cool image, it'll often get rewarded by being featured on the top banner with a link to its post. It's just a nice kudos, and brings more attention to cool stuff, and it's not purchased; there are no expectations to get it. It's just an organic thing. "Hey, people are digging this..."

    Anyway... what do you think?

  2. Sounds like a great idea! To be honest I've never had a reason to click on a banner add. I'm much more likely to click on a link to the same product in a thread, so the idea that these in thread "advertisements" (for lack of a better word) can be promoted as banner adds, that might be something that would actually get me to look at banners, lol.

  3. I don't have anything against banners - if they stay "out of my way". If I know that the site gets money though a click (or affiliate link) I will click them or purchase through them, since I'm supporting the site.

But also, I'm a guy who wants to support something I like - either by providing good content or donations.

The "featured post" is a nice idea - as long as it's clear why it is featured. E.g. "is it paid to be featured?" Or "is it hot?" Etc.etc.

  4. Yeah the idea is that you CAN'T pay to be featured.

  5. I hate ads which aren't well targeted. But honestly I very often hit some banners on other music forums like VI, everytime I see some product or developer which I didn't know before. So for me it has some informative value from time to time.

  6. Since most of us are audio guys and not so much graphical guys how about a featured member's composition?

  7. I think Good Products sell themselves and while I am not opposed to marketing, sometimes banners are distracting! Otherwise when I want or need a product I usually go hunting for it, and prefer it to not hunt me!!

  8. The only good thing about ads is that it at leasts brings about developer's attention to the forum. Why would we want their attention? Well not so that we cannot speak the truth about whatever product we are discussing, but the ideal would be so that the developers can get solid authentic feedback to pivot or continue doing with regard to development.

But either way I'm not sure I've ever clicked on an ad BUT that doesn't mean the 'impression' of the ad didn't enter in to my brain making me think about the product and taking up my psychological real estate :)

  9. Yo man, for real......if it makes you $, and it's enough to keep this place going, and it's devs we all dig for libraries we'd actually buy, no problems here. Do what you need to do to make this place cool.

  11. Yeah same here. I don't really buy much, for example, by 8Dio and I have no idea why they have no presence on VI-C (maybe someone could shed some light on that) but they seem to constantly bring out new libraries and seem to be doing well without the advertising. Saying that, there is a sale on every day so maybe I am wrong there!
