1. Didja accidentally blow through the whole, "We're using our real names" thing on registration? No problem, just send me (Mike) a Conversation message and I'll get you sorted, by which I mean hammered-into-obedient-line because I'm SO about having a lot of individuality-destroying, oppressive shit all over my forum.

He Had Potential

  1. I listened three times, and right from the getgo, I can't find a distinct rhythm to lock onto. Then when the drums come in@ :10, things get even more confusing. But maybe it's just me. Can you u/l another version with a click?

  2. I like the sound of it, but I'm in a similar boat to Jeff. I was able to get a rough tempo going, but had a hard time locking onto the rhythm.

  3. Thank you both Jeff and Sam for taking the time to listen (and to listen 3x's !) I do appreciate it, as well as your comments.

It's always valuable to know what comes across to the listener. In this case the rhythmic - what's the word ? --- slant (?) was intended.
    This affect was intentional.

As far as locking onto the pulse, the bass will give you the pulse. It's two 8th notes then dotted half. So 1 & 2 ( 3-4 sustained) repeat.

The drums enter and the snare lands on what you would feel as 3 (as opposed to 2 in rock music) as he is in half time (not the sporting kind)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Half-time_(music) has a nice graphic illustration of this concept.

On top of this he pushes and pulls (i.e tuplets etc.)

So I can understand how it can feel the way you commented.

Again, I do appreciate your comments and thank you for listening to the piece !

  4. Yes, I locked on to this straight away. Snare's more-or-less on beat 3. Depending on how much jazz/fusion you've listened to, I can see why this would be disorienting, but it's quite consistent.

  5. Was just thinking about this: If this comment was made while in the studio with a director ......... you know what would fix it (I think)

The Bass. I bet if the 8th's were on 4 & 1 (dotted half) it would ground it more as the long duration and strong 1 would give you that clear downbeat.

The drummer is a wonderful jazz drummer in NYC. (I'll not "name drop")

Thank you again for the feedback, and listening. I learned something too !

  6. It's raining here and what a nice piece to start the day. Thanks for sharing, Doug.

I had no trouble locking in on it from the get go, but I understand why someone might have.

  7. pretty cool track. No problem for me to lock on. Sure, it needs a couple of times but great track, Doug.

  8. Yeah..... that's the idea. Since I had the drummer there, and the band, I seem to recall we gave 2 measures of click then turned it off at measure 1 (3 in pro-tools) so they would just follow the drummer and not have a click.

  9. Doug

Good stuff it's smooth / fusion jazz with an interesting beat. It's also different enough that I don't hear the 'weather channel'. I love jazz (Louie, Miles, etc) but if I listen to the smooth stuff I just hear "and your local forecast on the 8s". This isn't that, very nice!

  10. Ok, thanks :)

So, Mike, you are ok with that, as-is?

^That is me so totally NOT trying to be a jerk. :)

  11. Now I am totally lost. Did I miss something ? Is this in reference to your high hat being the new "cowbell" ? I have a fever......

  12. This is very easy to lock onto, the bass gives the rhythm away.
