Hybrid Orchestral Track

Discussion in 'Critique & Feedback' started by Cody Ortz, Sep 27, 2020.

  1. Hey all! I'm back for more!

This track is WAY not in my comfort zone, but I had a lot of fun writing it. I've never done any kind of hybrid writing before, so any feedback here is much appreciated! Thanks in advance!

  2. Hey Cody!

I can't really comment on the Hybrid/Production stuff, I just listened to it on the laptop speakers.
But I have some thoughts about the piece.
I hope it doesn't seem to harsh, this is however how I perceived your piece:

Intro until 0:17 which is nice.
Then another intro until 0:32? I'm kinda waiting for the piece to start.
Then just adding another thing on top (doing the "vertical development" stuff), which doesn't make it more interesting.
At 0:48 finally the Melody starts, but it's really hard to lock onto/hard to follow. I'm about to get lost here.
At 1:08 you are starting a new piece. Again hard to follow the melody. I couldn't even tell if it's the same as before?
At 1:30 you completely lost me. It's not easy on the ears right now.

Sorry if it is a bit too blunt, I am rewatching some unleashed stuff right now and the stuff is starting to burn into my brain after 11 hours :D
Mike would probably say: "Remove all the sounds and get it to 2 handed Piano".
Which actually works. No matter if orchestral or a hybrid piece.

    Hope it helps somehow!

  3. Not too harsh at all, man! Plus, my mom would say it’s great so you can be as blunt as you’d like to be. :D

It’s funny you mention the two hand piano thing—I did actually write this out at the piano before bringing it into Cubase. But maybe I lost a bit of the clarity along the way.

    Thanks for the feedback though!

  4. Hey Cody,

Thanks for sharing. One thing apart from all of that: Where is the HYBRID stuff inside your track? At least from my understanding: Hybrid means that you merge let’s one idiom and sounds with another idiom and sounds together. Right now this track sounds to me like a regular orchestral music track. And there is nothing wrong with it. However, just a thought. If you really want more hybrid elements, you should start using SFX, Synths, pulses..etc. If that is your goal which I am not sure about.

  5. There are synth pads, arpeggiated synth leads, resampled/processed SFX, step filter insert FX, auto panning, etc. all in there. I'd say the synth to orchestra ratio would be about 20% synth/SFX and 80% orchestral. I even did some light sidechaining on the strings and percussion. The synth elements are at the front more in the intro and outro. I could definitely use more elements if that is more what you're suggesting?

What do you mean by "pulses"?

  6. Nice track, thanks for sharing. I agree with the comments so far.

For people to put this mentally into the hybrid category just from hearing the music, you probably need to give the synths and fx much more room to take on important roles in your composition and orchestration. If you want to explore more in this direction, maybe try writing those parts first and later augmenting them with orchestra, instead of the other way around?

Maybe something like this that gives a forward drive?

  7. Thanks, Martin! That's very helpful with an example!
