1. Didja accidentally blow through the whole, "We're using our real names" thing on registration? No problem, just send me (Mike) a Conversation message and I'll get you sorted, by which I mean hammered-into-obedient-line because I'm SO about having a lot of individuality-destroying, oppressive shit all over my forum.

Critique on a Production

Discussion in 'Critique & Feedback' started by Abián Castellano, Oct 4, 2020.

  1. Hi there everybody! I am new to this place. I have been watching Mike Masterclasses for a while now, I own them all but still five or six to go. Very interesting advices and motivational talk, apart from the ranting <3. I wanted to share a song I "finished" a couple of days ago.

About me: I am from Canary Islands, Spain. I have been studying music from zero for 6 years now, I did not know what a major scale was. I have been studying with private teachers mostly; my "master" went to Berklee and he studied Film Music there and he has been teaching me things about orchestration and composition. I lack the aural skills and the play skills which I am working on now, especially learning voicings chords (which already know theoretically) but putting them to work. It has been a bumpy ride this project I have about music. My sole goal is to make a living making music. Also, when it comes to practice I am not as good yet using all the things I have been learning (Harmony, Counterpoint, Form, etc.). This song is not my best work, but it is something I am publishing after 6 years (not fully). I will try to publish music on weekly basics but, we shall see.

I also own my own studio: my studio gear is an iMac Pro with UAD Apollo 16 and Quested V3110.

    This is the song

I would like to know what do you think about it in terms of form, the structure and if the song is boring or I succeeded in keeping the listeners interest; the production, mixing, if there are things (of course there are a ton) that are unbalanced. I have been reading for a while this forum and it seems a very supporting interesting community, and I am happy that finally I am posting something.

    Thank you for reading!

  2. Hi Abián,

Thanks for sharing you music – quite enjoyable :)
Out of curiosity: do you know about Fimucité? It's a yearly film music festival on Tenerife that plays film music live. If not it might be something for you.

  3. Hi Thomas, thank you for listening! I didn't know about Fimucité, I'm from Gran Canaria. Tenerife has a better music network and studios than Gran Canaria, in fact most of "great pop/EDM festivals" take place there and there are many places where good live music is played, jazz, etc. I'm doing my research, it seems that they have sort of an academy, with masterclasses and workshops. I'm curious, is it like you can submit your pieces?

  4. I don't know if they do it like that. I know they bring composers over from Hollywood to do masterclasses. This year they had Iván Lacamara and Manel Santisteban that composed La Casa de Papel. Even if you don't have your music played it's worth the knowledge and network to join festivals like that.

  5. Yes you're right! I will be looking for that, it seems that the Festival took place the previous month. I have got a few connections from the Tenerife. I will try to find out more. Thank you for letting me know that!
