    Hey Buddies,

So the other day I started watching that new Mandalorian show together with my wife. And honestly..we both didn´t know much to almost anything about that show. I think the only thing I knew was that somehow it had to do with that bounty hunter thing from SW. So after a few episodes, I must say that I like that new show quite a lot.

The main character is cool, the stories are exciting enough for me to have some popcorn and the music fits. Overall I enjoy watching that new show coming from a Company that ruined SW for me, which is a bit of a contradiction.

I really wasn´t expecting something like that after my huge disappointment which I have experienced with the last SW movies. Now another thing I noticed (a very good friend also motivated me to pay further attention to the score) that I really dig the main title and the music overall too. I think it is very different of course to the classic SW music but I think it is simply well done and combines electronic and classic scoring orchestra sounds in an interesting and refreshing way. At least that is how I think and feel about that music.

How about you guys? Any opinion? Any thoughts? Or do you feel that I should consult a doctor or go to a therapist? You see me often not quite raving on modern scores and I just wanted to prove that I still find things to like (though it is not often these days.)

Did L. G. thought of Apollo in the desert ripping off the line? :D

Best wishes and happy Xmas time.
    Alex

  2. I agree with just about all of your points. I like the new show, a lot. I hated the SJW takeover of the latest SW movies. So I was expecting to dislike this show, but to my surprise, I really like it.

My one disagreement with you is the music. I do not care for synths, especially when a real orchestra is available. Mixing synths into orchestral music is like sacrilege for me. They should have hired you to do the music or Mike Verta. I can't remember the last movie score that I liked.

  4. I haven't watched any of the show (not ruling it out for the future though), but based on the two snippets I've heard from the soundtrack, I don't like the soundtrack. I appreciate it, but I don't like it. It's good to try something different once in a while. And I think it's good to make things that some people strongly like and some strongly disklike, instead of the focus-tested mediocrity that "most people are OK with" but "no one really feels strongly about".
And even though I wouldn't want to listen to it on it's own, I could imagine it not bothering me when it's playing in the background of the show. Maybe I'd even like it there in the right context.
And I'm really glad you like it Alex! I know the feeling when you start to lose faith in entire segments of media because it's been so long that they made anything I truly liked and a fear is creeping up that it might never happen again... Like in that one southpark episode about getting old...

    Hej Paul,

Thanks for chiming in and of course letting me know your opinion. Well, there it is I guess that I care for synths more than you and think the synthesis here is to my liking. I don´t know if they should have hired somebody else, but one thing I know: definitely not me.
    Get well mate!

  6. The problem with many hybrid scores, for me, is that too often the orchestra is used to amplify or "bring life" to the synth parts, but this is accomplished by doubling what is already in the synth parts rather than using the orchestra to add different colors, melody, counterpoint, etc. to the piece. So then the orchestra gets buried in the mix and you end up with thicker sounding synths and a piece that doesn't sound at all orchestral. What I like about LG's approach to the hybrid score is that for the most part he uses the synth as another color along side the orchestra. Strings still sound like strings and horns still sound like horns and the synths add more variety of colors.

  7. Absolutely love the series and I think Ludwig did a great and unique job with the music. I personally prefer his electronic work to his orchestral, specifically episode 6, but it was very interesting and well excuted overall. Funny enough, my unleashed submission this year is heavily influenced by this soundtrack.

  8. I adore this show and it's score. I'm so thrilled that it actually has a theme and motifs that he uses throughout and has some cool little developments of them. It all kind of reminds me of a combo of "Amazing Stories" and "The Good the Bad and the Ugly." Rich orchestral textures in some parts and cool, edgy modern production / synth in others; and both together. I really dig this and hope it starts a trend of more leitmotif driven / modern scores.

  9. I may well check it out if these are your sentiments (I concur completely). Not only were the new SW movies fraught with bad writing, Disney panicking at the reception of The Last Jedi and causing them to undo everything done in the first two films seems to solidify the monumental waste of money that was that "trilogy".
