Where to buy RAM for Mac Pro 5,1?

Discussion in 'Tips, Tricks & Talk' started by Luke Johnson, Jul 26, 2017.

  1. So...

It's been one of those nights whereby I have finally realised why Cubase and VEPro is crashing on my Mac Pro 5,1 and I either have a Faulty stick of RAM or a RAM slot is faulty (currently testing it all now). I was wondering if anyone can recommend RAM for the Mac Pro 5,1. I currently have 64gb and have a few questions...

Can I just buy an 8gb Dimm Stick and mix it with my current RAM?
Should all RAM be from the same batch (negating my previous question)?
Is there anywhere decent to buy Refurbished RAM to save money and if so will it offer a guarantee?

I would like to upgrade my RAM to 128gb in this machine eventually so I am wondering whether I can mix and match different sizes of RAM together, for example, buy a stick of 16gb and mix it with the 8gb sticks? 128gb of RAM is seriously pricey so if anyone knows the best place to buy that much I'd appreciate your wisdom.

    Thanks

  2. I used to overthink this one but really Crucial (as you know) is one, if not the most popular place for us here in the uk.
It's also worth shooting an email over to Mr Memory who knows his stuff also and might do you a better deal after you get a quote from crucial.
I spoke to him directly when sorting out my old imac ram. https://www.mrmemory.co.uk/
