1. Didja accidentally blow through the whole, "We're using our real names" thing on registration? No problem, just send me (Mike) a Conversation message and I'll get you sorted, by which I mean hammered-into-obedient-line because I'm SO about having a lot of individuality-destroying, oppressive shit all over my forum.

First solo album "The Night Before" is out - would love feedback!

Discussion in 'Critique & Feedback' started by Jure Jerebic, Nov 19, 2019.

  1. Hi everyone,

After a few months of work, my first "solo" album, a holiday orchestral release "The Night Before", is now out, published by Ghostwriter Music / Astral Music Publishing, for the licensing industry and general public.

Keep in mind this is not a completely free artistic endeavour, but rather an orchestral album, aimed at music licensing. Would appreciate any feedback!

  2. I've just heard some of the previews but this sounds like a very viable commercial production that should get some airplay. The question is, do you make money with it? I have some friends who have releases similar quality productions and even with multiple sales outlets (as you are doing) they barely earned enough to buy a pizza or two, let alone to pay for the cost of production and make a profit. Without promotion, it seems its hard to get much traction even with a high-quality production. Does your publisher also do promotion? How do you plan to tackle this?

I suppose as your focus is more on music licensing than airplay you've written an evergreen piece that can just wait as long as needed to accumulate license deals. So do you go exclusively with a single publisher? Do they give you some idea of what results to expect? It seems like a lot of work (and cost) to put together such a production and then just place into the hands of an unknown publisher so do you have some idea of their reputation and results?

  3. Thank you very much for checking it out, Gregory. This was released by one of my publishers, Ghostwriter Music (their sublabel Astral Music Publishing). Once the tracks get used, I will make money from it, but also from any purchases from these online platforms. The publisher actively pitches the music to their clients (feedback is very good already, as the album's been out and available to the industry for a while). This particular publisher I have an exclusive contract with, as with most of my other publishers - not a whole lot of money in non-exclusive licenses these days, and those kinds of publishers are slowly dying out. That's why I gave it my best, because their reputation is very good in the industry, and they have very much a proven track record of placements, so I was comfortable with spending a lot of time honing out these tracks and giving it to them. Three tracks on the album actually have two versions (normal and trailer), but for this release, they used the trailer versions and not the usual orchestral ones. I have the full album also on my Soundcloud, which includes the normal orchestral versions as well:

  4. That's great if the publishers are actively pitching to clients and they have a good reputation. Wishing you good success with these!

  5. Yeah, I wouldn't give this album to a publisher that would just let it sit on a shelf. Thank you so much, means a lot!
