No problem, just send me (Mike) a Conversation message and I'll get you sorted, by which I mean hammered-into-obedient-line because I'm SO about having a lot of individuality-destroying, oppressive shit all over my forum.

Adventure Brass Mixing

Discussion in 'Tips, Tricks & Talk' started by Samuel Diaz, Jul 2, 2017.

  1. Hey everyone, first of all I'm thankful that Mike has created this forum since I've learned almost everything composing wise from his classes and I use his techniques daily on my film projects. I finally got a hold of Adventure Brass and love it's playability but I'm having some issues mixing it with other libraries since they sound a little lo-fi and thin to my ears. Any one have any work arounds for this? On Mike's demos in the "Mod Squad" masterclass they sound fantastic.

  2. Hi Samuel,
Nice to meet you here.First of all, what might help: Could just upload maybe on the dropbox a short sound example of yours? I have also adventure brass and I didn´t stepped into much problems mixing the brass with my other existing libraries. Where it sounds thin to you? One thing I do is, that I added an instance of QL Spaces to the brass, because brass also lives from its reverb. Other than that when you want more highend in the mix, you can slightly boost some frequencies around 7 - 10 kHz. Depends also on the instrument and the general approach on the rest in the mix.

  3. Yes let's hear where you are so far!

  4. So sorry for the late response Alexander and Mike, been having a crazy week at work. Here is something I just played in really quickly to give you an idea of where I'm at with the adventure brass sound. Please forgive the sloppiness of the performance.

I exaggerated the brass volume a little bit here so you can hear them more clearly.

Thank you for the tips Alexandre and very nice to meet you as well, I'll definitely try spaces on them and the EQ setting you mentioned to see if that helps. Any other tips you guys can give would be awesome.

  5. Would you mind posting the stems from the demo? Just remove any processing from tracks and master, and I'll look into it :)

  6. Hi Samuel
There are a bunch of different ways to skin this cat. Alexander get's great sounds out of his Brass so you can't go wrong with his starting point. For Adventure Brass, I've tried two separate effects chains and have't settled on one yet. The first is to insert a convolution verb plugin of choice and use an IR with reverb tail around 2.0 secs (this also depends on which other libraries are in your template.) On a direct insert you can play with the dry signal to taste, then I eq after the verb. A gentle wide cut around 200 - 600 Hz for some separation and a little mud reduction. And a gentle boost some where b/w 3K and 6K depending on the instrument (horns, trumpets, etc). For me, Numerical Sounds convolution impulse responses are the closest thing to magic sauce to help give some life.
I'll check back when the stems are posted.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi,
Honestly: I don´t see much of a problem with your sound here. It sounds totally fine to me. Where is it thin? I mean..it is a relatively dry scoring stage brass, man :D That is the sound. Sure if you like a bit more ambience just add some reverb but actually I don´t see here a problem here. The important things are done good: clearness, punch, and expression. And if you still think that the brass sounds thin to your own taste..go and supplement it with another instrument library here and there and add if you need a bit more highend with eq in case you still want more highs. But don´t overdo it with the eq..as it tends to sound unnatural when you dial in too much boosts. What I do also is using tape saturation plugins to "add" more harmonics which can work also. Just try out what works the best for you brother.

Edit: probably the problem could be that you havent properly balanced the brass with rest in your template which results in that you think the brass sounds too weak.
