No problem, just send me (Mike) a Conversation message and I'll get you sorted, by which I mean hammered-into-obedient-line because I'm SO about having a lot of individuality-destroying, oppressive shit all over my forum.

  1. Hi there,

Here is my next installment of "some chops" series.

What i am trying to do is :

    - Find a simplest melody to connect with everybody.
    - Explore major minor versions and beyond. Harmonize the s**t out of it.
    - Use 7th chords and half step movements to create Williams feel... (???????)(not nearly close)
    - Play it live don't care about awful performance :)

  2. Keep on doing what you are doing (I think that is great) but I would offer one big caveat.

    Expand your plate of influences.

Bernard Hermann used to always say "Don't aspire to be a good film composer, aspire to be a good composer"

Nothing wrong, or negative at all here. It's a long road, and everyone has to go thru the same stages.

Keep up the good work, and expand your sources of inspiration

  3. Wow! I didn't know he said that, and it's funny because that defines my drive for the past year Doug. Thanks for sharing that quote! :D

  4. I would use a little bit much sustain in the left hand and less staccato, so you'll have more glue and you can concentrate more on developing your idea instead of thinking about left hand.
    And also always in the left hand use a bit of arpeggios sometimes (with 1°, 5°, 8° and/or 1°, 5°, 9°, 10°)

  5. Thanks a lot for your comment. )) my question was more like composition and harmonies rather than playing skills. )) I am not a piano player at all and aim to orchestrate the composition using an m-audio 88 keyboard so left hand performance would become completely different. how do you find the harmonic events going on in the composition?

    Best,

Ok, I think that here you have improvised and played with your piece for finding its own voice. Now that you have explored all those possible parts where you can go, you have to cut a lot of themes and using the 2 or 3 most effective which you will use in this piece.

I think you should cut completely the part from 0,26 to 0,42 and go directly to 0,42.
From there it's all ok, very good.
Now if you do that cut, you'll have the part until 0,42 that it's the VERSE; then from 0,42 to 1,35 it's the CHORUS
At 1,35 you should cut and do again the VERSE but with that pulsing bass that you began doing at 1,30, that is a good arrangement(orchestration) development.

then you'll decide after doing this 2nd VERSE how to go ahead: if with another CHORUS or maybe with a 3° part(BRIDGE) and then after that you can redo a CHORUS.
That's pop music structure and works the same for film music, unless you have to do something different because of the picture...
