1. Didja accidentally blow through the whole, "We're using our real names" thing on registration? No problem, just send me (Mike) a Conversation message and I'll get you sorted, by which I mean hammered-into-obedient-line because I'm SO about having a lot of individuality-destroying, oppressive shit all over my forum.

My 2nd Live Orchestra Experiance — London Strings Orchestra

Discussion in 'Critique & Feedback' started by Abdulrahman Al-Othman, Jan 26, 2019.

  1. Hi,

May I introduce 'Always A Hero', a soaring string piece written and orchestrated by me with additional orchestration by my friend, Vladimir Tubic. Even though it is only 1 minute recording, but hearing the grand performance of the finest London players along with the unparalleled acoustics of Abbey Road is very well-worth it!

Honestly, I didn't have to do any mixing besides some lights EQs, analog effect and an additional reverb. Everything was balanced and pleasing to the ear. Why not? Because the mics setup and the mix was supervised by Abbey Road brilliant engineers and you can't doubt the sound at all.

Note: The Timpani, Bass Drum and Cymbal are just samples mixed in.

  2. Congratulations on the experience! It's always great to get more under the belt.

Maybe you should trim the file since it contains 30 seconds silence at the end.

  3. Bravo !

This isn't the $99 session ..... is it ?

  4. Hey, I heard this live! Nice work! :)

I had a piece in that session, too. May I ask... was there any significant mixing done in the Pro Tools file they sent, or did you start "from scratch" with the audio files only? I ask because I use Cubase myself, so can't open their project file... but I'm interested to see what they did with the mix (if anything) as an opportunity to learn...

@Doug -- this was the €299-and-up London Strings session.

  5. @Thomas Bryla Thank you, man!
You are right. I don't know why my DAW exported that extra 30 seconds like you mentioned. I made sure to trim the audio tracks inside. Weird.

  6. @Doug Gibson <3

Yes it is, but not anymore. Now, it is called Musiversal. A refreshing start for their company. The service I took is called 'London String Orchestra'. It is basically their grand service and the best they could offer.

  7. @Conor Brace Hey, I do remember you!
Well, I never expected the session files would arrive so soon. I don't have ProTools, so I'm unable to open their session. I've done the mix by myself using the close and tree mics only. The acoustic and mic quality sounds fantastic!
But is it normal that all three tree mics are panned to the left? I had to pan them manually. Anyways, I hope you liked my mix and composition :)

EDIT: Now I remembered they included their live mix tracks.

  8. How many takes did they do?

  9. 5

  10. Have you tried using a different take of the cello melody that might have better tuning?

  11. Hm, I don't know but it felt pleasing to my ear. The conductor was very cautious with the Cellos. He mad them play off record once just to get the right shifty transition of the notes to add more emotion to the melody.

  12. Well it's not the transitions but if it's pleasing to you then that's fine.

  13. Please, share your feedback. This thread is what it's all about. I may not have the enough experience to deal with live players, so perhaps you could share some advice with us? :)

  14. I would just find a take with better tuning for the second half and edit those takes together. As I wrote a couple posts above.
