1. Didja accidentally blow through the whole, "We're using our real names" thing on registration? No problem, just send me (Mike) a Conversation message and I'll get you sorted, by which I mean hammered-into-obedient-line because I'm SO about having a lot of individuality-destroying, oppressive shit all over my forum.

  1. Because I don't play an orchestral instrument, my exposure to the sound and techniques of the orchestra is limited compared to those who grew up sitting in the middle of one several days a week. I've been watching these as a way to try and deepen my understanding of writing idioms and performance techniques on these instruments. I hope it will give me a better intuition for what sounds correct in my mockups.

  2. Thanks for sharing and very instructive. Btw the instructors trombone sound and what he gets out has low bottom butt in the sound, thats great. I saw the video a while ago and thought..the poor guy..:D he seems stressed, because I guess it is not easy to get into the mind set. Reminds me on SNL with "We need more cowbell".

  3. You can always go to a school or college and ask to sit in and listen, or get students to play things for pittance or pizza. I've done this countless times. I've just stopped a brass player and asked if he and a couple friends would play through something for me because I'm trying to learn to write for their instruments more competently, and I've never once been turned down. I would tell them I didn't have much money, but it wouldn't take very long; they could just do it in the common area outside the building or whatever. And I would put something on some stands, absorb, and learn. Anybody can do this and transform their writing. We learn by doing.
