1. Didja accidentally blow through the whole, "We're using our real names" thing on registration? No problem, just send me (Mike) a Conversation message and I'll get you sorted, by which I mean hammered-into-obedient-line because I'm SO about having a lot of individuality-destroying, oppressive shit all over my forum.

My transcription of The Awful Waste of Space

Discussion in 'Tips, Tricks & Talk' started by Krzysztof Fokow, Feb 9, 2018.

  1. It is almost a year since Mike suggested transcribing Awful Waste of Space from Contact by Alan Silvestri in his "The Mod Squad" Masterclass, so I thought I'll give it a try. This was a fun exercise. Very straight forward in most of the places. The most difficult parts were bars 18-30 since they are the most dense orchestrally bars in the whole piece. I probably messed up in the Low Strings, but this is the best what I can figure out right.
The opening and closing ostinatos were probably played by a synth, but I used a Glock since it was the closest orchestral instrument I was able to think of.
Anyway if anyone wants to point my mistakes I'll be glad. Also I wasn't able to find a score for Contact to make my own cross-reference, so If you know where I can find one please tell me, it will be a good study.
Anyway here is the link to my pdf file:

I'll do a mockup later when I'll be sure that my transcription is correct.

  2. Cool ! I have never heard this piece, so I can't offer much help.

However just looking at the PDF the strings must be off in the use of doublings.
Violins and Violas. Having violin 1 take the high stuff would make much more sense.

I would be willing to bet a beer that there are more doublings at the unison than on your score.
It is not so much an issue of volume, as it is density or a roundness/fullness of sound.

I can't image they wouldn't want the fuller sound

  3. Nice one @Krzysztof !
I'm hearing a couple of things in the first few bars that are not in your score, like the flute-y (synth?) choir and the celesta accents, also the f that comes in on the 3rd beat.
Also I'm pretty sure there's tuba (just) on those big low notes (you can kinda hear the 'phwaa', but mostly it's just beefing up the bottom end).

Not sure I will be joining you for this one though as I want (/need) a score to check against and as far as I know only the 'End credits' are in circulation.
(P.m. me if you want the score for that one, I'll be glad to help ;))
