No problem, just send me (Mike) a Conversation message and I'll get you sorted, by which I mean hammered-into-obedient-line because I'm SO about having a lot of individuality-destroying, oppressive shit all over my forum.

Negative Feedback

Discussion in 'The RedBanned Bar & Grill' started by Doug Gibson, Dec 13, 2017.

  1. Just wanted to post this for anyone who is too nervous, or on the fence about posting their cues to Sensei V. and
unleashed. Not so much chat here, but back when Vi-C was my procrastination joint I would come across a message of someone who really wanted Senses's feedback, but nervous about getting picked apart.

If this is anyone here, I would highly encourage you to submit your work. Not only is it good training for you, and inevitable
you are going to get negative feedback at some point in your career.....but one other point needs to be stressed.

The dude (Sensei) is really nice. Man, he really is a positive guy ... likes to rant at times, but goddammit he has earned it.
Every time I have ever seen him offer a critique he offer clear points, and really does encourage you. There is no reason to not jump in. It's like being scared of Kung Fu Panda.

Just to offer a little insight into the bullshit I get. If anyone recalls that concerto I wrote; I submitted it to a panel for a funding grant of my future work. No helpful advice at all. I won't use his real name, but this is all that cock-sucker mother-fucker panel member had to say about it:

Unfortunately we just didn't find the works convincing enough on their own terms.
The bass clarinet concerto, the most recent and most ambitious work, fell short for us in a number of ways: we didn't find the pacing of the overall shape effective; the material in the solo line itself lacked character and focus; and the orchestration was rather generic, taking little to no advantage of the highly unusual instrumental line-up (e.g. the celesta and two harps, and the low woodwind complement).

Lick my ass douche bag. One needs to develop "Grit" if one wants to be a composer for a profession.
It can also be very motivating to have a chip on your shoulder sometimes.

PS. Oops I might have used his real name

  2. Ditto above. Having your music torn apart by someone who can actually articulate the problems is invaluable. Don't think about it, just do it.

Thank you for posting Doug and nice that you encourage us here to submit pieces. I for myself think it is great idea with the unleashed thing and well what can I say to that feedback you got..man..just don´t take that personal. There are just people who wants others to feel bad, and they feel good with that. I like your piece a lot and you know what: That matters! :D Forget about those assholes...

I think a legit critic is ok, but when it is like not to mention anything good there is something wrong and unbalanced.PS: I actually didnt found the orchestration mediocre...

Before I forgot: I had one or two similiar experiences. One I remember pretty good where I had to do some "massive attack" inspired music. So I submitted 2 demos. The feedback was the following:" That was worst massive attack inspired tracks I have heard so far in my life, defintely I would give you an "F".
Well...I thought: Wow, thank you. I think I am not doing the project then..roflmao..

  5. Based on the quality of your music that I have heard, I am truly shocked that your music was so poorly received. And two tracks? Both grade F? Hard to understand that. I wonder if they were using a temp track and were simply looking for music just like the temp track, but were not honest enough to tell you.

Well Paul..you know there is the point, I have no problem with critic at all. And if somebody doesn´t like what I do..I am fine. At least it would help me in such moments that I am told what exactly I could do better. I don´t say that my submissions were glorious. How they can? I am no guy doing this kind of sound on a regular base. Maybe I missed the goal because I tried to do something which is more up to my alley more, and not just temptracking it which actually didn´t I tried. I don´t know at least. this manners are not nice but one thing I always do: I don´t put that onto my ego to feel miserable after that. It did actually bother me maybe quite a bit but just because the critic was missing some kind of help, but instead just smashing it down. But well, thats how it is sometimes :D and quality of music doesn´t probably mean I am good in doing that..not at all.

  7. I mean look at Dougs example..is he not capable of doing some great stuff? Not at all. It is personal taste, but the way how you say it is important. There are individuals who are like that.

  8. One thing I have really understood: Send your ego with a one way ticket on vacation. If you don´t you won´t get happy doing a job like that.
