    Hey guys!

So I've been following Mike's advice and been playing around with Christmas carols on the piano. I came up with this version of "We wish you a Merry Christmas" using simple "pop" harmony:

Let me know what you think. Also, I think it would be great if you guys could do your own version and share it here. We could turn this into a reharmonization thread, a little bit like what @Alexander Schiborr did with the orchestration thread. What do you think?

  2. Sounds like a cool idea! I would join that.

  4. @Sylvain Provenzano Nice one! Just be careful at 00:18 when you go to the V - I think it feels a bit awkward because most of us are subconsciously waiting for a resolution here. Also, that makes the melody note (G) a 4th and as you know this is a dissonance. You get around it by playing a sus4 but it still feels a bit unnatural.

  5. @Claude Ruelle Thank for your advice. Wouldn't sound less awkward if I had played the sus4 and resolution twice longer ? I ask because that's what I did before recording and it never bothered me.

  6. Well, I don't know. What's happening here is that you're turning your melody into a 4th to 3rd resolution - This should happen in the harmony but not in the melody. Plus it creates parallel octaves. My personal opinion is that you shouldn't go to the V and resolve it instead.

  7. This looks fun, I will jump in on this later.

  8. A late night attempt at the piano. Done it veeery fast (about 15 minutes?), almost improvised.

I wish I knew how to play jazz.

  9. You know what would make it much better ? At measure 9 add in a repeat sign to measure 2. Just repeat the whole section. No change in dynamics, or articulations. :) Just kidding you

In all seriousness I would kindly offer, that to my ears measure 16 is off. Just make the whole of 16 a dominant. Slow it down so it feels like an ending.
The A# with B on top sounds off to me.

I would personally just simplify it like below. I like what you did BTW.

  10. Ha! :D :D
Yeah it definitely makes more sense! Thanks!

    That's simply glorious!

    This sounds great!

Oh man, this thread is so much fun

  11. Another option for m16 if you want to keep the A# (Bb) in the bass is to make it a dominant chord. Bb Ab D E from bottom to top. I'd also change the chord at m12 because the Fmaj7 to D doesn't feel smooth and also holding the D chord for two measures disrupts the flow of the harmony changing every measure. You could either make m12 a Dsus that resolves to D in m13, or make m12 an A chord (which is in the original).

  12. Thanks a lot! I really wanted to find a way to keep the Bb, but I couldn't really figure it out. I could almost "hear it", but not quite, so thank you for that :)
Also, great advice about measure 12, definitely an improvement!
