No problem, just send me (Mike) a Conversation message and I'll get you sorted, by which I mean hammered-into-obedient-line because I'm SO about having a lot of individuality-destroying, oppressive shit all over my forum.

Transcription Practice

Discussion in 'Tips, Tricks & Talk' started by Doug Gibson, Nov 26, 2017.

  1. Found this funny little piece. Sounds like it could be in a Tarantino film. I like it however.

    Here are two versions.

    1. Is the Sibelius playback of my transcription
    2. The original recording while the transcription scrolls along.

I already see one error. Dang.

  2. Is the stave with the mp3 hidden? Do you have to timecode it?

Also, do you go bar by bar (barbarbab), or transcribe one instrument for the whole piece, then move on to the next?

  3. No you don't have to create and extra stave. It is like a DAW in that sense. I sometimes do however. I make a video today to explain when and why I do.

I was asked about this in another post so I'll add onto this thread. In this video I show how to add an mp3 to the sib file.

I'll make one showing a few options later. Anyhow, the good thing is you can see the score and audio together, which is helpful for tempo.

Here is my Sibelius Score to Mike's Batman ride. (We might see the real score one day on an episode of Storage Wars)

  4. Thanks, looking forward to it.

Regarding the Batman transcription - ya know, it didn't seem like much of a deal a few months ago when you posted this on VI-C. Like, 4 days, psssh. I think mostly because I wasn't transcribing much back then. Seeing it this way, today...

Fuck man, that must've been one hell of a coke run.

    :D:D:D

  5. Is there any other kind ?

Even though it has baseball references I love this short video so much. Perfection

  6. Hahah, this is great, I've never seen this before!

Mixing it with booze, of course. You end up with something like Stephen King's novels from '80s. I still remember reading that Misery was actually about cocaine, that Annie Wilkes is cocaine, and it all making sense then and there. “I am your number one fan.”

Well this is starting to go off rails.

  7. Adding mp3's to Sibelius. What can I say about the text ? I am in a "mood"

  8. This is great stuff, thank you, Doug! Yep, makes total sense, and easy to implement. Great work on the Batman transcription, too!

  9. I didn't pay too much attention the other time you posted this on the forum, but jesus that is a transcription of gigantic proportions! Is it true that it took you only 4 days?

I'm also curious about what your process is, how would you tackle a piece like this?
And also, this might be a dumb question: do you have perfect pitch? I know that maybe it doesn't really help in hearing stuff "more clearly", but maybe it speeds up the process a little bit, if you're bypassing the piano...?

  10. Just under. It was 3 full days and then day four was scattered so I posted it on VI-C.

I explained everything over there, and can recopy if you wish. Basically the reason I was able to do this in this short of time was due to having nothing else to do.

My wife was set to give birth, so I cleared my calendar and told everyone I could not take on any work at this time, and I would let my clients know once my son arrived and was back working. Then the day came, and nothing. My wife was in a "don't talk to me mood". She only wanted to think about making the labor happen. So I was like: alright fuck it...... let's find something to do, and I had never heard the piece before. I just stayed in my "man cave". 5 days later my son was born.

No, I do not. I began music when I was 13/14.

I've joked about this, and you can find references to it above. Basically this is how I get ready to transcribe.

Personally I'll use anything that helps get the job done. I slow things down, I personally think the piano is wonderful for helping transcribe, and yes practicing transcribing without an instrument is great too. Everything and the kitchen sink approach from me.

The real hard part is actually the typesetting. The harder part is to remember what you heard after going through menus in Sibelius and having to think about navigating the program. Something to be said for pencil and paper man. I also am terrible at multi-tasking. So in the future I would probably advocate segregating one's workflow. Pencil paper transcribe so you focus only on the music. Then typeset so you focus only on engraving issues.

Maybe if this lady rides her bike by my house, I will do another big transcription. I have found some scores form the 50's that are out of this world !

In the mean time I just need to stop watching Soul Train. What a great show ! Why was I not alive back then ?
