Template with CSS and Adventure Brass

Discussion in 'Tips, Tricks & Talk' started by Sylvain Provenzano, Nov 12, 2017.

  1. How do you include these two libraries in your template in terms of kontakt instances/mics positions/routing/effects ? I read Mike uses only the mixed position for Adventure Brass, does it mean no panning, no ER, no common fader with others brass libs ?

I'm trying to start a template with good practices so I could build on it and add progressively other libraries.

For informations, I use Cubase AI and QL Spaces.

I happen to use both in my template! I love both of them. For Adventure Brass I use the "mixed" position. Three instances of horns, three of trombones, one for adventure trumpets (that I only use for sketching, since I much prefer SM Trumpets.

I find Adventure Brass pretty dry and thin, thus I have some saturation and EQ going on, as well as reverb. While working, I have a send to a track with Lexicon LXPHall, and before rendering I switch over to SPAT 3. I like the positions the library is recorded in so I don't do any panning.

CSS required a bit more fiddling. It's pretty dark and (I think) the main mics were in an A/B setup. While that's fine, I like Decca more, so I tried to skew it more towards that type of sound. While it's not the same thing and can never be, I found that using a delay with no feedback (so there's no echo, it just delays the main signal) for two taps, one being -6db, mono and having no delay at all and second being just delayed by ~8ms achieved a more "solid" sound while maintaining width, similar to how Decca recordings sound. On top of that, there's gentle saturation to lows and low mids and EQ emphasizing mids and highs. Now, due to how it's been recorded, this will make the noise very audible, so I use Waves X-Noise at ~80% to handle it (disabled while writing because of ridiculous PDC). Same as for Adventure Brass, send to LXPHall while working, switch to Spat 3 while Rendering.

Here's a quick AB of without/with processing. Note that this sound is a personal preference.

If you're fine with the default sound, just slap some reverb on it (or use the one in the library) and you're good to go.

Thank you for all these informations. Btw, Adventure Brass seems to be all center on my setup and I have to manually pan the instruments.

Edit : I just made a try with ERs and it sounds better than panning in kontakt.

Now I've to improve it. =)

  4. Uhh... Is your Kontakt OK? Try it in a new track? Other libraries work? Mixed mic selected? Don't have a mono fx on the track? Some plugins come in mono and stereo versions.

  6. I just had a listen and that's how their trumpets sound. It sounds a bit to the left, which is why I swap the channels (I totally forgot about this but remembered when I heard the example). Since I have an insert EQ on them, I just do it in the In/Out routing of the EQ.

  7. Yes, adventure brass Trumpets are recorded with left seating. You can...swap channels..The trick works fine.
Actually I am building up also a new template with adventure brass :D

Hm, I think actually it sounds quite good. The brass feels a little bit too loud for me, maybe 1 db less..it is not much.. and the separation could be a bit clearer, like that trumpets right and horns left fist in your ear thing for me. But apart from that I like the sound honestly, it has the right orchestral ommph. If that is a result of Mikes MC then I would say: It is really good! :)

  10. Thank you Alex. Brass balancing is my main struggle for now but everything needs more work. I'm like a sorcerer's apprentice and I don't really know what I do. :D

  11. Ahhh..... I was walking down the street and then this giant hole opened up in the sky, swooping me up, and bringing me here as I have been summoned.

Now..... what the fuck am I doing here ? What is it ?

  12. I would want to know if you have in your magic hat some small extracts of music (maybe just few bars) wich be efficient to test the balance between instruments of a single section and between different sections, and of course with a score available somewhere.

Since you're good to provide useful stuff, I've instantly thought about you. :D
