Hero - Car Chase Mockup

Discussion in 'Tips, Tricks & Talk' started by Benjamin Goldman, Oct 10, 2017.

  1. Hey Everyone!

A few days ago, I posted this mockup on V.I. Control and thought to share it here as well! It is a quick template test using Robin Hoffmann's recently released score entitled, "Hero". Robin also kindly made the sheet music available which has a ton of great info, tips and tricks in there!

Any advice/feedback is welcomed and appreciated!

  2. Hej Benjamin,
I had some time to listen a/b comparison and you did a very well with your mock up test here. I don´t know if that is helpful or not, but from a technical standpoint your mockup has a good amount more reverb and a bit resonance dirt in the low strings. And the the original has a bit more brilliance. But this are more production / mixing..or a mastering stage things..to consider. So will you do more bars? Where is score? Did you transcribe it or did you worked with the score? I mean yeah it is nice to look directly how a cool orchestration is done, but the better exercise would be first to do a transcription. Anyways good work here.

  3. Thanks for this, Alex and as you can tell, mixing is not my strong suit!

You are definitely right about the extra reverb and this was my attempt to ‘place’ all of my sections in the same hall. With such different libraries (Spitfire, Cinesamples, Orchestral Tools), it was difficult to get them to sit together since some are recorded ‘wetter’ than others. I’ll try to dial it back a bit!

    - For the strings, I do have a low cut around 60hz, would you suggest I maybe try 70/80hz?
    - As for brass, would a slight EQ bump work to get the sound a bit more ‘brassy’?

This was done from the score and most is as far as I’m going at the moment. I will try to record some more bars when I have a bit of time as it was a great exercise! Also, I usually transcribe directly on piano since it gives me a clearer idea of where everything lies in the range and how it feels under my fingers. (I also hate like comparing samples to real musicians as it can be quite frustrating:)

    Thanks again!
