1. Didja accidentally blow through the whole, "We're using our real names" thing on registration? No problem, just send me (Mike) a Conversation message and I'll get you sorted, by which I mean hammered-into-obedient-line because I'm SO about having a lot of individuality-destroying, oppressive shit all over my forum.

Mixing orchestra - Reverbs, EQs and other tricks

Discussion in 'Tips, Tricks & Talk' started by Patryk Scelina, Jul 4, 2017.

  1. That is why you only send the early reflection and not the tail or the dry signal. The other thing you have to be careful of here is if you are working with libs that are recorded in seated positions. In these libraries there is already some early reflection information to give you a since of room. If you are using Spitfire samples you don't need this at all. This really only works with dry libs (Sample Modeling, VSL) with very little early reflection info baked in.

  2. I mainly use dry samples, and usually create my early reflections using a stereo delay on the section sub-groups. Should I create Auxs with a stereo delay and then bus the section sub-groups to these? And then, bus that signal to the other sub-groups?

  3. It's only the ER's I'll send around, as Gharun suggested. My ER's are usually sub-group-based (i.e. Trumpets/Tbns/Tuba is one subgroup, all with the same ER/positioning) and then a little of that might get sent to other subgroups.

  4. Hey everyone - I'm working on a project that's trying to recreate Shawn Murphy's mixes on JW scores, by exactly mocking up some pieces.

I'd be happy to share the dry instrument stems here when I'm done and then perhaps we can all try to do mixes?

I'm VERY interested in Mike's microphone bleed trick...

  5. Count me in! I am in a very similar process right now. Thank you so much for providing the stems you've made so far. Which libraries are you currently using? I have had some luck with the SM-brass, but now I am going to try to add both Berlin Strings and Woodwinds and some Spifire Percussions.

  6. I'm using exactly those libraries, BWW, BB, Spitfire Perc, and then CSS for the strings.

  7. Impressive work, Noam. That kind of passage tends to decimate sample libraries.

  8. @Noam Levy
Man that sounds great. I'm interested in the stems as well. Now if we all could just write like that!
    Great stuff.

  9. Thanks. There's still a lot of work to do with it (definitely the woodwinds are too close, and the brass positioning is too narrow compared to the huge stereo separation of the brass in JW's early-2000s scores).

Been super busy with real life stuff but I'm excited that other people want to look at / work with the stems and I'll share them as soon as I can.

  10. @Noam Levy No worries. I'm busy "adulting", too. It's a hard thing fueling this composing habit.;)

  11. Which scores exactly are you referring to. I would like to compare your mockup to the recordings.

  12. @Noam Levy I just took another critical listen at your mock up trying to figure out what really sells it. For me it's the strings. That quick slurr run for the first half really goes a long way to sell realism of the mix. I use a combination of Spitfire Strings and Cinematic Scoring Strings and have never come anywhere close to getting a string sound like that. If you don't mind revealing your secret sauce; What combinations of CSS articulations are you using? Would you mind sharing the midi for the string section when you are ready to post the stems?

@Alexander Schiborr This piece is from one of the Harry Potter films. I'm not sure which one. I'll let you know if I stumble across it.

  13. This is from Chamber of Secrets, "Fakes the Phoenix"

  14. Hi all - happy you're interested in this project! I'm traveling this week but when I get back to LA next week I'll share the stems.

Alexander, the piece is Fawkes The Phoenix from Harry Potter 2.

Gharun, everything is CSS out of the box; no articulation layering ;) it's the Marcato legato if I recall. KS F#0.

  15. @Noam Levy Sounds already pretty cool. Here are a few little things I noticed:
    1. French Horns: In the reference they tend to have a bit more of bite in their attacks. Technically I don´t need to tell you how to do that.
    2. The balance between those accented trills on the violins and the flutes are a bit different in the original, they seem in the original a bit more equaly in balance. In your mockup you seem to have the main focus on the winds. At least from my listening here.

There are a few other really minor things, but these 2 things stood a bit out for me. Other than that: Already pretty good.

  16. Thanks! I started a new thread for the project here. Stems going up soon.

  17. I was just rewatching Virtuosity and I did not get this. Now I understand. I will be giving this a try.

  18. Hello everyone again. I've been testing Virtual Sound Stage plugin and I wonder. I can understand using it for dry VI like samplemodeling to get right position and distance in space. But what do You think of using it on sample libraries which already have much reverb in the samples. I think Harp is a good example. Many Harp libraries are recorded in center and in order to place it on left or right You could use VSS and just move it around. But the question is what about all that ER's and reverb which is baked into the samples ? Have you used VSS ? Do you recomend it for wet samples at all ?
