    Hi gang,

This is probably crazy, but I figured I'd share a sketch which in an extremely primitive state. This is the polar opposite of the fancy mockups typically posted by people here.

I was transcribing parts of a march involving a certain darkly clad figure stomping about on space ships when I felt that it would be fun to play around with rhythms vaguely in the same territory. I made this extremely primitive sketch involving just sampled piano. I didn't actually play this on the piano (which is obvious if you listen to it) since,
    1. I can't play this fast (bad excuse) and
    2. my daughter was sleeping so I didn't want to disturb her sleep (a better excuse).

This is all on an extremely robotic programmed piano part. It sounds like a piano version of an early computer game.
Is it possible to see past the silly piano sound and think about the idea?
I thought it was fun that it shifted keys so many times throughout the piece. (Starts in Cm and goes Dbm, D, Gm).

I found this idea a bit of fun, but the question is: is it worth bothering to orchestrate and mock this up, or is the idea itself too silly or flawed?

    The sketch:

    The orchestrated (per-)version:

  2. :D

    So you've met my mother-in-law?

    Nope.....sorry. :p:D

    Great!!

Ahh......but now the REAL Question for me to ask you about this question: Do you want me to bitch slap you with 9 inches of limp dick?

Never ask anyone that again. It is the antithesis of being an artist. The only thing that matters is how much YOU believe in YOUR ideas.
You are the one who has to exert the energy to bring it to life. If you are seeking it from outside....you are doomed.

In all seriousness, I think it is great you posted a piano version like this. I do similar things all the time. I wish we had more examples like this posted here.

You asked if it is possible to see past the piano: The real answer with my "nope" was the great thing is this rough-draft piano version actually makes you engage with the idea at a core level and so you only focus on the ideas. This is why I think it is really, really wise to have "rough-drafts". Let them sound rough. The fancy sounds can fool anyone.

Let me know when you decide if you are actually going to finish the piece and I will give you comments on it. (no point until then)

In the meantime, I would say pan for gold from scores with a similar vibe and ponder what else you can do to transform your material over the duration of time of your piece. Like a formula: Material>Tranformations over duration = listeners experience

  3. Thank you for your response Doug! I am honored that you always take the time to give extended replies (and some funny remarks).
It is amazing to have such knowledgeable persons such as you and other being so generous with your time on this forum.

Thank you also for all the music you linked to. It took some time to get through that, but there is a lot of extra-ordinary music on there. Of those pieces, I had only really studied Mussorgsky in detail before. Other pieces I had never heard, or had heard but not paid sufficient attention. (Grieg was much better than my causal listen had revealed!) There is a lot of gold to be gotten from those pieces given some careful study.

This is excellent advice, and you are absolutely right of course.

Hah! I did not see that coming. (Figuratively or literally? Let's go with "both"! :) )

Yes, it was extremely tempting to reward myself with mocking up this with the fancy sounds of the computer, but then I knew I would just settle with whatever idea I had. I found it rewarding, and yet quite difficult, to try to hone the idea without resorting to other sounds than the piano.

Yes, I will definitely want to work more on this so any advice you could give would be terrific. Also, your point in the thread about transcribing Harry Potter gave me another perspective on my own piece. One way of looking at it is that it a variation of the theme from Williams with the purpose of learning from it.

  4. Here is the updated orchestrated version:

I used this as my submission for Unleashed. Here is what Jedi master Mike had to say about it:

I can’t seem to get a time stamp on it (perhaps because I am on the iPhone), but it is at 1 h 33 min 25 seconds.

Clearly much for me to think about!
