Hedwigs Theme Transcription

Discussion in 'Critique & Feedback' started by Alex O'Hagan, Dec 11, 2019.

  1. Hey guys, so I started transcribing stuff lately. I started with some tunes that I didn't have the sheet music for, and although it was fun, I felt like I was actually re-enforcing bad habits due to not having a way to correct my mistakes. so I got this Harry Potter score and i've been transcribing like 8 bars at a time, and then checking it. (sooo many mistakes lol)

so here's what I've got so far.

damn these fucking violin runs lol

  2. Nice. What is your goal for this?

    My 2 cents:

I think it would be more profitable for you to stop where you have with the transcription and write a set of variations on what you have already.

Below is a video I have posted here before that outlines the general idea. But you can do it your own way.

In case you don't know the original source copied I am linking the opening the Firebird. I mix in Harry Potter later which is why I am
    posting this here for you.

    Be well

  3. Nice job so far. Way better then what I could do. I commend you for working hard on this. Some of those scales in the string runs sound a bit off. Unless my memory is incorrect, but real splendid job for transcribing that. I'd definitely be transcribing at 0.25x speed trying to figure out those string notes.

I'm curious to know as well if you do plan on adapting this or trying to write variations like Doug mentioned. I do agree in the Mike Verta transcription learning process and it only has so many benefits, however, I personally do what Doug does when learning. I find a specific part, transcribe or look at the sheet music, and adapt it into a new piece or variations so I can learn the technique and how to apply it. Thus, trying to fully engrave the idea or concept in my head and eventually digesting and using it long enough one variation of it will become my own.

Hope the rest of your transcriptions and writings go well.

    Cheers!

  4. Doug, your video, writing, and tutorial is sexy and very educational on how to learn, vary, and adapt to your own. I'm surprised I haven't seen this video before from you. Honestly, this should be a forefront video because this is how we all learn from each other.

    Thanks for sharing.

  6. I could not distinguish from the original, well done, but I don't have expert ears

  8. Hey Doug, my main goal is to just start transcribing stuff. I've never tried recreating other peoples music before, I usually learn just enough of something to "steal" what I like about it and use it in something of mine lol. I think really digging in deep and transcribing full pieces will help me with my main two areas where I need to improve the most (Form, and orchestration)
I think you're right, thanks a lot for the video. I will return with a variation

  9. Thanks Dillon, I tried my best to transcribe the runs and failed miserably at first lol, I literally had to check the score after every up and down movement. I THINK that they're right, but there's a good chance I messed something up.

I agree that sounds like a good idea. I usually learn best by putting new knowledge into practice immediately, so writing some variations of this will probably help me the most.

    thanks again man!

Good job on that. I think it might be worth considering transcribing the next piece on paper or with a notation software. I find that it cements the music on a deeper level and it helps making a visual connection and recalling orchestrations later on just by remembering the way they looked on the page. I used to transcribe in my DAW too and for sure it has its own benefits but it's bit like doing it blindfolded. I'm sure you'll see tremendous improvements as soon as you'll start putting the music on a page.

I'm pretty sure I've seen the score you transcribed in one the links some people shared!

  12. hey thanks man! I'm definently gonna check that out. As for transcribing in my daw, I totally know what you mean. the first thingy I was transcribing I was doing a mock up and also writing down the notation on this score pad that I got. I think i'm gonna continue doing that with this one too, as it really helped me visualize what the music is doing.
(I also really like the act of writing out the music on paper compare to notation software. There's like an "artsy" aspect to it I guess lol.)

i'm pretty new to reading/writing music notation, so anything that makes me practice has to be a good thing.
